1821 Restaurant

Sydney CBD

Sid dined on Fri, 30th Nov 2018 (8)

A well thought out design to provide ample light and space for diners and allow a great ambience. Food quality is good with creative twists on traditional dishes. A big plus for me in a city restaurant that caters to business diners is that 1821 doesn’t scrimp on quantity. Portion sizes are healthy and satisfying. All dishes we ate are highly recommended: pork belly baklava, lamb shoulder, croquettes, dips/bread, caramel baklava ice cream. Would certainly visit again.

Long Chim Sydney

Sydney CBD

Sid dined on Mon, 22nd Oct 2018 (7)

Long Chim maa tasting menu provided a good range of dishes and generous portions. Good quality Thai with good flavours but nothing that will have you longing to return in a hurry.

Lot. One Potts Point

Potts Point

Sid dined on Sun, 21st Oct 2018 (8)

Though quiet during Sunday lunch hours, the airy and bright setting was welcoming. Service was with a smile and the food was hearty. Lamb shoulder was tender and thrice cooked potatoes were crunchy and soft as you’d expect.

Mordeo Bistro & Bar

Sydney CBD

Sid dined on Mon, 15th Oct 2018 (7)

We took advantage of a Dimmi offer which made the food great value. Overall a good experience combining food quality, ambience and service. The beef cheek was as expected. The schnitzel perhaps a little dry. Pleased with the loukoumades.

Sid dined on Wed, 10th Oct 2018 (8)

Great food, service, ambience. Thanks Casoni.

The Cut Bar & Grill

The Rocks

Sid dined on Wed, 10th Oct 2018 (5)

Saddened by the fact that I’ve never felt so unwelcome in a restaurant or anywhere else for that matter. Treated with absolute contempt from the moment I walked in, by the male waiter/front of house and to a lesser degree by the waitress. The waiter/front of house spoke to me cordially, though with a thinly veiled air of disdain that I rarely see even from the most obnoxious hospitality staff who hate their job because it involves dealing with people. Perhaps it was because I asked to be seated at the bar as I was alone. Perhaps it was because I booked using a Dimmi promotion. In any case my only thought as I sat there was that it beggared belief how management could employ individuals who display this type of behaviour. The beef tartare sandwich wasn’t bad. But why would I want to write about the food as it hardly matters given the experience was verging on hostile.

Billy Kwong

Potts Point

Sid dined on Sat, 6th Oct 2018 (8)

Ate some memorable food here. Everything as you’d expect from an establishment with the reputation it has. Thanks.

Cho Cho San

Potts Point

Sid dined on Sat, 29th Sep 2018 (9)

Cho Cho San Feast for 1. Absolutely exquisite.

Ho Jiak Haymarket

Sid dined on Thu, 27th Sep 2018 (7)

The food is very good but we were given all 5 main dishes from the tasting menu at the same time to share between two people. Obviously 4 were cold by the time we had eaten the first one.

Chaco Bar

Sid dined on Sat, 8th Sep 2018 (8)

A little gem. Good food and a great vibe in a cosy space.

Sid dined on Sat, 1st Sep 2018 (9)

Tasting menu. Absolutely exquisite.

Surry Hills

Sid dined on Thu, 30th Aug 2018 (9)

I keep coming back because it’s hard to fault.

Malabar @ Darlinghurst

Sid dined on Thu, 2nd Aug 2018 (6)

The curry I chose was average. The service could be much better but would require the waiters to be trained in understanding local customs and cultural sensitivities.

Surry Hills

Sid dined on Fri, 29th Jun 2018 (8)

As always, a delightful experience. Menu, preparation, service, atmosphere, all excellent. The papaya dessert a letdown however, as the fruit wasn’t ripe and very little work goes into the construction of the dish. They could do much better.

Tokyo Laundry

Sid dined on Tue, 19th Jun 2018 (7)

Quality Japanese food. Recommended lunchtime omakase.

The Bathers' Pavilion

Sid dined on Sun, 17th Jun 2018 (8)

A thoroughly enjoyable dinner on a lively Sunday evening. Good food, service and atmosphere. Lamp rump was a standout dish. Thanks.

Surry Hills

Sid dined on Mon, 4th Jun 2018 (8)

Longrain doesn’t disappoint. Flavours and aromas. Atmosphere. Great service. Excellent.

Solander Dining and Bar

Sydney CBD

Sid dined on Thu, 31st May 2018 (3)

Sadly, Solander fell wildly short of expectations, from the big important stuff, all the way down to the small stuff, which shouldn’t be sweated when the big important things are there. Firstly, I waited patiently at the entrance for around 4 or 5 minutes unattended before proceeding into the restaurant and approaching a staff member. This, I wasn’t too miffed by at the time, but by the end of the meal it certainly mattered. My main concern was the way that the restaurant mislead us into thinking we’d get 5 full courses as part of the degustation menu. This would be a logical assumption given the price point was $105 and the sum of the 5 dishes served amounted to around $105. This seemed overpriced but the Dimmi offer made it appear to be good value. However this was sadly not the case as the dishes has been shrunk to ‘barely there’ portions. To give you an idea, scallops meant one scallop, the beef in the main course was just larger than a scallop and the mousse dessert a tablespoon-sized portion. At full price, it would’ve been extortionate, and cheaper to order each item individually from the a la carte menu. The quality of the food itself was very average. We left the restaurant hungry. On the plus side the ambience and lighting is good.

Sid dined on Wed, 9th May 2018 (7)

Of the 5 dishes we thought all were good, none were outstanding and worth mentioning individually. Except perhaps the baklava. For the price point, I think Sydney offers much better in terms of quantity and quality. The service is professional. The location and ambience is superb during lunch service. Thanks.

Darling Harbour

Sid dined on Mon, 7th May 2018 (6)

Decent enough curry though nothing to write home about. Waiter had no clue how to guide a customer through the menu. No real ambience or welcoming vibe to the place. The location is great. I would tear it down and start from scratch.

Hopper Kade

Sid dined on Thu, 3rd May 2018 (1)

There may have been an off-day in the kitchen as my lamb ribs came out luke warm, stubbornly attached to the bone and chewy. The taste wasn’t too memorable either. The owner came and asked about my experience and was sympathetic when I told her, subsequently not charging me for the food. I can’t comment on the quality of the food I didn’t eat but I was surprised by the high prices for what is supposed to be casual food. A small portion of fish curry at $14 and rice (marketed as biryani boat) at a whopping $9. I really wanted to enjoy my experience here but sadly I felt that stopping at the entree was the best thing to do.

Surry Hills

Sid dined on Tue, 1st May 2018 (8)

Excellent. Pork hock 8.5/10. Peanut pumpkin curry 8.5/10. Banana fritters 8.5/10. Great flavours and textures. Healthy portions and pleasant atmosphere.

Eastside Kitchen + Bar

Sid dined on Mon, 30th Apr 2018 (6)

The ceviche is great. The miso black cod lacked both the taste of miso and the buttery softness of black cod. However it was satisfactory. On a separate note, I wish restaurants would inform their wait staff what’s on the menu. Ideally they should know the finer details, especially in a restaurant like this. However just the basics would suffice. I was told the cheesecake was mango and the plum compote is presented separately on the plate. The plum compote was in fact presented on top of a normal cheesecake. The dish was good so I wasn’t too dissatisfied.

Milano Torino

Sid dined on Thu, 26th Apr 2018 (7)

The oven baked figs wrapped in prosciutto were supposed to have Gorgonzola but there was so little of it that it was neither very visible nor tasteable. The dish was, however, still quite good. The beef short rib was tender and juicy but lacked any distinct flavour. They were kind enough to swap mash for chat potatoes but these didn’t possess the crispy on the outside soft in the middle texture that normally makes them so moorish. Good for a neighbourhood restaurant at a decent price point.

Salt Meats Cheese- Circular Quay

Circular Quay

Sid dined on Tue, 24th Apr 2018 (8)

Both pasta dishes, the paccheri and the pappardelle, were excellent, with great balanced flavours and good ratios of meat to pasta. Portions were also good. The tiramisu was very average; similar to what you might get from a supermarket. The hazelnuts sprinkled on top was a great touch but not enough to make it particularly memorable. Overall, recommended for the pasta dishes.

Good Pizza

Sid dined on Tue, 20th Mar 2018 (9)

A wonderful little neighbourhood gem. Was able to order a half and half: lamb ragu vs roast pumpkin. Both excellent wood fired pizza flavours. Lovely chilled atmosphere. Great service. Highly recommended.

169 Darlinghurst

Sid dined on Fri, 9th Mar 2018 (7)

Great cheese platter. Some dishes were too salty. Tiramisu was the highlight.

Subsolo Spanish Restaurant & Bar

Sydney CBD

Sid dined on Thu, 22nd Feb 2018 (6)

Regular Spanish fare. Nothing extraordinary but decent. Dimmi offer makes it good value.

Surry Hills

Sid dined on Tue, 6th Feb 2018 (8)

Creative menu. Tasty food. Will come again.

Surry Hills

Sid dined on Sun, 14th Jan 2018 (7)

One of Sydney’s fine Thai restaurants.

Kid Kyoto

Sydney CBD

Sid dined on Tue, 19th Dec 2017 (7)

Pork belly was fantastic, as was the ceviche. Smoking salmon would be an acquired taste unlike most others. Overall a very good lunch experience. Good service, good atmosphere, good interior layout and design.

The Riverview Hotel

Sid dined on Mon, 16th Oct 2017 (6)

The entrees of pork belly and gnocchi were good. The main we had was osso bucco which was slightly disappointing. The flavours were great but the meat just a little dry and tougher than it should’ve been. The desserts we tried were the sticky date pudding and banoffee tart. The date pudding was standard. The sauce was a disappointing sugar/water caramel rather than the much richer and tastier butterscotch. The banoffee tart was anything but a tart. On top of the thinnest sliver of filo pastry were careful placed pieces of pretzel, banana, caramel and chocolate fudge. Whipped cream was conspicuously absent. This blast of sweetness was unbalanced and overwhelming.

Delhi 'O' Delhi

Sid dined on Wed, 11th Oct 2017 (6)

Good local food. Won’t blow you away but you’ll be satisfied. Service is very good. Maybe a little over the top for a local restaurant.

Masala Bowl - Pitt St

Sydney CBD

Sid dined on Tue, 5th Sep 2017 (8)

Thali has lots of variety, is great tasting and great value.

Potts Point

Sid dined on Tue, 18th Jul 2017 (8)

A lovely neighbour restaurant with a lively atmosphere and good quality food.

Manta Restaurant & Bar

Sid dined on Tue, 11th Jul 2017 (6)

The service was substandard but the food was pretty good. Nothing that was pushing the boundaries, just decent seafood in a pleasant setting.

Blanca Japanese Mediterranean Dining

Bondi Beach

Sid dined on Sat, 1st Jul 2017 (8)

Fantastic 10 course tasting menu at a great price. Excellent fusion of cuisines, concepts, flavours, textures.

Sid dined on Thu, 22nd Jun 2017 (8)

Creative menu and flavourful dishes.

Sydney CBD

Sid dined on Wed, 14th Jun 2017 (8)

Ordered the tasting menu with The Great Lamb Raan. Overall a great selection but the lamb was a huge disappointment considering its name and price. It's no doubt slow roasted and thus very tender but the flavour, or lack of, left much to be desired. The peanut semi-freddo is a huge hit though. Followed by the Gin & Tonic Cheesecake.

Essenza Italian

Surry Hills

Sid dined on Wed, 7th Jun 2017 (8)

Risotto and gnocchi were delicious. The dessert tasting platter is exceptional value and very tasty.

Lucky Suzie

Sid dined on Mon, 29th May 2017 (9)

A fantastic set menu for the Vivid festival. Great value and delicious food. A well thought out set menu with multiple courses. Diverse flavours, generous portions and excellent service. Highly recommended.

Hugos Manly

Sid dined on Fri, 26th May 2017 (9)

Best pizza in town.

Double Bay

Sid dined on Tue, 9th May 2017 (8)

Good quality food. One of Sydney's better churrascos. Lively but not raucous.

Tequila Mockingbird

Sid dined on Tue, 25th Apr 2017 (7)

Service was slower than we would have liked but overall the experience was positive.

Sid hasn't selected a top 10 yet.
