Jan Oravec

Born in Slovakia, head chef and owner Jan’s career began being inspired by his grandparents Southern European background. Jan moved to Australia in 2005 after graduating from a Culinary Institute in Slovakia, drawn to learn from such a multi-cultured society. After working in fine dining for 11 years Jan followed his dream in 2014 and created Ahgora, a family style restaurant with a less formal setting and intimate ambience where people share good food, good wine and make memories together.

Fantastic meal! Service was impeccable even though she was so busy serving the entire restaurant. I had high hopes for this place and it did not disappoint. The banquet menu was truly value for money. Great experience.

This is a fabulous local place for me...... the food is well above average...... the service is always top notch.... i love the atmosphere....... a friendly vibe with lovely mood lighting. we enjoyed the banquet and ended up taking home a doggy bag..... this was no trouble for the staff.

Best moussaka I ever had. No mince here. They use slow cooked beef instead. Together with ricotta bechamel makes this moussaka stand out from the rest. Cooked in a large ceramic dish also makes it a generous serving. I've paid the same for half the size. The red cabbage and apple salad was the freshest and tastiest I've ever had. The desserts also to die for. Will definately return to this restaurant.

Ahgora is one of my favorite places to eat. The mezza plate is divine as is the slow cooked lamb. All dishes are excellent. Definitely put this one on your list.

About Ahgora

Unorthodox Greek. A relatively new addition to Glebe Point Road’s flourishing restaurant scene, Ahgora’s modern take on the Greek classics is proving popular among the locals. Owners Jan and Marek both hail from Central Europe and they have devised a selection of share plates ranging from a mezze plate and grilled haloumi, to slow roasted lamb, pork belly and salted cod croquettes. This is food cooked with love, culminating in delicious slices of sticky house-made baklava. The name means ‘meeting place’ in Ancient Greek and the idea spreads from the share-plate menu to the intimate dining room; it’s a great place to relax and catch up with friends. The restaurant also serves its own take on chicken souvlaki, lamb wraps and beef keftedes at lunchtime and Greek omelettes and haloumi stacks for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. You should give this one a try. Best Dish: Slow roasted lamb.
