Meet the Chef

Born in Slovakia, head chef and owner Jan’s career began being inspired by his grandparents Southern European background. Jan moved to Australia in 2005 after graduating from a Culinary Institute in Slovakia, drawn to learn from such a multi-cultured society. After working in fine dining for 11 years Jan followed his dream in 2014 and created Ahgora, a family style restaurant with a less formal setting and intimate ambience where people share good food, good wine and make memories together.

I liked the food - very tasty & the service was good too. My partner felt it needed to be more traditionally Greek. May be a factor for you to consider.

Nice food, good service, reasonable portion size, decent variety of menu. Just wish the restaurant was little bit lighter.

Food is delicious! But the order of the food was a bit strange and annoying...mains come out one at a time so you end up eating say the octopus then wait another 15min for the lamb then another 10min for the moussaka. And the sides come after you finish your mains...? So what on earth are you supposed to eat the roast potatoes with?? Went there twice and probably won’t be back for awhile.

What a beautiful little hidden gem! The entrance is unassuming, inside its darkly lit & contemporary and the food is modern Greek. Everything was delicious, well balanced, generous in size and excellent value. The dips are a nuce way to start & the warm pita bread is so good & I'd be happy to eat that on its own. The charred octopus was super tender & well balanced by the refreshing yogurt & cucumber. Halloumi ravioli is delicious with a stretchy, bouncy pasta which has a beautiful texture. Lamb was generous, super tender & moist. Even the side dishes shine like the beautiful cauliflower which has a nicely spiced, crunchy top. A concise drinks list means its easy to pick something from cocktails to beer or wine. Service is friendly & efficient. An absolute gem.

Second time we have dined here. We really enjoyed the tasting menu and wine. The only negative I would say, would be that they could do with more than 2 wait staff. The staff were great but clearly very busy. We had to wait a while for service and had to stop them on several occasions to order more drinks etc. This was not because they were being inattentive, but because it was a busy night with not enough staff.

About the restaurant

Unorthodox Greek. A relatively new addition to Glebe Point Road’s flourishing restaurant scene, Ahgora’s modern take on the Greek classics is proving popular among the locals. Owners Jan and Marek both hail from Central Europe and they have devised a selection of share plates ranging from a mezze plate and grilled haloumi, to slow roasted lamb, pork belly and salted cod croquettes. This is food cooked with love, culminating in delicious slices of sticky house-made baklava. The name means ‘meeting place’ in Ancient Greek and the idea spreads from the share-plate menu to the intimate dining room; it’s a great place to relax and catch up with friends. The restaurant also serves its own take on chicken souvlaki, lamb wraps and beef keftedes at lunchtime and Greek omelettes and haloumi stacks for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. You should give this one a try. Best Dish: Slow roasted lamb.
