The service staff who looked after us was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The ambience was great and the food was lovely. It’s the first time we dine at this restaurant and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

The service was awful. Sat at the table for 20 minutes before being offered even water. Was brought the wrong dishes, servers who brought the dishes didn’t even know what they were... requested small adjustments to items and was charged for the adjustments without being told that the changes would add cost. They tried to clear the plates 2-3 times while we were still eating. Bar closed at 9:30 (our reservation was 8:30) so no more drinks could be ordered 1/2 way through the meal..

The oyster appetiser and cold bread and almond soup was superb. This was followed by a delicious and refreshing mango and prawn salad. We were let down by the cod which was over-confit and over-salted to the point it was borderline inedible. The flan was average - too eggy. Overall let down by the cod and dessert dish.

The staff and restaurant were very nice. The food was also good, but unfortunately completely overpowered by the amount of garlic in each dish.

Service was good. Didn’t like being rushed to order mains from the male waiter. We sat outside was hard to get attention some times but all in all was a reasonable experience.

The food was ordinary. A bit pricey for the quality. I had the duck liver pate and there was something g crunchy in it. ????. Couldn’t eat it. I used to really love the restaurant when it was in Balmain but it’s changed

Great Spanish Food, the Carne Paella was our particular favourite. A wonderful setting and decor much nicer than the previous premises which were too dark. Enjoyed the Flamenco dancers also. Would give a written description of the Spanish wines in the wine list as we were a little lost (although the Spanish Red we chose was outstanding!) We will certainly come back...

The long term Balmain Spanish specialist has moved to its perfect new home in Rozelle. Lookn forward to arvo tapas & beer We had a great lunch for their first Sunday. Thanks very much. Always reliable & it comes with live music. Moved up a notch, a marriage that MAFS would be proud of.

The service from our waiter was the shining point of the evening. Agreed it was the "Grand opening" but thats no excuse to have the (what appeared to be owners/managers) reaching over your table to pass drinks out the window to friends outside. The presumed owners/managers were drinking a lot in front of patrons whilst the staff ran their backsides off to serve tables. The lights were way too bright, the show put on was nice but lighting terrible. Food was mediocre - paella was outrageously expensive and rice overcooked, meat overcooked, meatballs plain, empanada was more a pie (empanada should be corn based and crispy), calamari was good, croquettes were plain. A very expensive evening for mediocre food. The management/owners should have closed the restaurant and invited their friends for a personal party instead of drinking in front of patrons. Not what you expect when paying those prices. In a market with excellent competition this is not the way to run a restaurant.

Confit duck lacked a crispy skin, but it was falling off the bone and not at all dry. Spanish ratatouille was interesting. Could have done with more ratatouille and less potato.

We were really disappointed. Both Paellas were over cooked and when I mentioned this to 2 different staff members - they looked blank and said nothing.

About the restaurant

A Taste of Spain In Rozelle

Alegrias is a hidden gem tucked away at the back of the Institute arcade building, one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Sydney's inner west. Located on the main st in the heart of Balmain upon entering you will be transported to Spain. With crystal chandeliers adorning its high ceilings and hardwood features that will invoke images of the classy churches of the past. Romantic candlelit tables with a central hardwood fireplace make it the ideal hideaway for a romantic date during the week, while the live Flamenco shows with dancers and musicians on the weekends transform Alegrias into a lively and boisterous venue such as can usually only be found in Spain.

The cuisine is traditional Spanish tapas with a twist from the labours of executive chef David Leon who takes no shortcuts in its production and presentation with everything from the sauces to the bread being made in house to deliver authentic flavours of Spain. The wine list curated by Head Manager, Chef and Sommelier David Leon consists exclusively of wines imported from Spain that are not commonly found in Sydney so as to fully complement the cuisine. Alegrias is the ideal restaurant for group functions with its big tables and tapas being the perfect cuisine for social dining.
