Meet the Chef

Robert Cockerill was born in Sydney but spent his childhood living in Europe. Rob began his apprenticeship at a local café in Newcastle, and began working in hatted Sydney restaurants in early 2000. Following a move to Far North Queensland, Rob was approached by the Soho House Group in London. Upon his return in 2008, Rob approached Quay and worked under Peter Gilmore. In July 2015, he became Head Chef at Bennelong, delivering the very best Australian produce within a uniquely Australian space.

    The restaurant is beautifully situated in Opera house with an amazing view and ambience. The service received was excellent as well. However, I felt the food fell short of expectations, especially for the price. The entree of XO scallop and squid noodles were both excellent start to the meal, but then the food went downhill from there. The wagyu beef was quite chewy and the fish was under seasoned, we were disappointed by this given the entrees were both excellent. Both desserts were extremely pretty and well presented, however, they were both too sweet and one dimensional in flavour. We had high expectations of this place given our excellent experience with Quay, but I think the food here is just not on the same level.

    Service was outstanding from the moment we walked in. Our meals were all very good with excellent wine pairing suggestions. Expensive for sure but you know that and it was truly worth it

    The food, service, presentation etc were excellent, but the draft from air conditioning was very annoying. We ware sitting on the east side of the restaurant and were all chilled. I think more attention should be given to the air conditioning system operation as it spoiled my otherwise excellent experience.

    A perfect evening- could not find fault with anything. The food was excellently presented and tasted as good as it looked. All the staff were welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and professional from the greeting when we arrived throughout the meal and upon leaving - especially our main waiter Anno (sorry if that's the wrong spelling) who's from Indonesia and studying at university in Sydney. Will definitely return again.

    The food was very good. However probably not quite as good as the price would suggest. They weren't ready to seat us at our reservation time and they charged us $12 for the bottle of water we had while waiting! The service was also a bit slow for our taste, however if you like a very slow meal and aren't hungry when you arrive that might suit you.

    Wonderful restaurant with not only lovely food, but great attentive staff who noticed every detail. The Moreton bay bug we ordered for our entree and wagyu rump cap for our mains were cooked beautifully. The peach bellini dessert was a perfectly refreshing end to our meal.

    Outstanding customer service! From the moment we walked in, every waiter that served us, knew it was our anniversary and congratulated us throughout the night. The cocktails were a delight and the meals were delicious!

    It is a superb location and the view does it all. Service is attentive and thoughtful. Food is good, but that is the disappointing side: for that price, you expect it to be very good or even excellent. The seafood and the fish were slightly overcooked and the sauces lacked in flavour, inventiveness, .... A pity: all in all you will get much better in Sydney for cheaper, (but without the view).

    Fantastic food! Had the three courses and had so many choices. Got to try a few of my guests dishes as well and every dish was spectacular. The xo scallops and wagyu rump were standouts. Service is also fantastic. Helpful, friendly but not in your face. Perfect for a special occasion. Views were stunning. Location top notch!
