    The food was sensational, and the menu offered a good variety. Although, not a ‘feed me’ menu, the waiter was able to choose a wonderful ‘sharing’ selection for us. Wine list is extensive, and again, the knowledge of the waiter was outstanding. I look forward to dining here again - lots more on the menu to try.

    We discovered Bistro Gitan on the other side of the park recently and it is now a firm favourite. Consistently good food and wine and delightful staff. Took a friend for lunch today and he had the best steak he has ever eaten. That says it all!!

    My first visit, an unqualified joy. Excellent menu, and service; marred only by an extraordinariy noisy group ladies whose conversation was more competitive over who could talk over her companions. This is of no fault to the excellent management, service and delectable food won over the day.

    From start to finish the service and the food were expert and personable. Despite being a cozy place on a busy Saturday it was buzzy without being loud, and the staff were neither intrusive nor absent. The Tonka bean creme brulee was amazing, so plan around that if it's on the menu.

    My son, daughter in-law and I dined there this evening. We really enjoyed the ambiance and the standard of service. We were impressed with the menu and the quality was excellent with generous serving size. Great place to catch up and dine well with a varied wine list. I would not hesitate to recommend it!!

    Great place. Booking 9pm an it was full. Small menu and great wine list. Generous servings of great food. Service was a little bit off in my opinion but wouldn't stop me coming back. Pity I am from Sydney and am not here that often...

Situated at the top of Toorak Road West in the iconic Fawkner Hotel is Bistro Gitan, delivering a celebration of French family style eating that’s flexible and allows guests to enjoy a dining experience much like they would in France. Siblings Nathalie, Edouard and Antoine each manage roles front of house, while the kitchen is run by Stephen Nelson who was picked from the team at Jacques Reymond Restaurant to run the cuisine element of the busy Bistro. Created by Jacques Reymond the menu is an interesting and exciting blend of European cuisine with French base, hence the name Gitan which relates to the gypsy travellers of the Basque region. Some staples on the menu include the piccata of chicken livers, fresh pappardelle, balsamic and watercress, escargot in parsley and garlic butter, a must try even for the most delicate of palates, and a spatchcock with mustard crust, butter savoy cabbage and devil sauce. There is a fresh take on the ubiquitous steak frites with Hopkins River Black Angus Beef and a unique delivery on the traditional Croque Monsieur. But that’s not all...the specials board changes daily with a range of six to eight dishes and the wine list offers an intelligent selection of Australian, French and Italian wines, all carefully curated by Nathalie and Edouard. The warm wood tones and double French doors and windows at Bistro Gitan suit the food and atmosphere beautifully, with the bar creating a central focus for both diners and casual drinkers who can mingle by the charming copper clad fireplace. All in all the Reymond's Bistro Gitan is a warm, friendly restaurant that serves delicious dishes with precise yet relaxed service.
