A great local bistro, true to its French origins and style. Can be a bit noisy, but good food, an excellent wine list and the French-style make it a great place for lunch or dinner

Prompt and excellent service. Stylish, interesting and ‘french’ decor. A smallish but friendly restaurant with great attention to detail. Great food. Will definitely come again. Keen to try the 3 course $42 lunch menu.

Amazing food. Only complaint was service was a little slow and lighting a bit dim but didn’t ruin the experience would certainly go again. Be warned that when you look at the food it looks like it’s smaller than a normal dish you would get out however it is extremely filling and delicious. We certainly overordered

First time we’ve eaten at this divine little French restaurant in Sydney. We will be back and have already passed details on to other family members. The only down side for us is how noisy it became when the restaurant filled with patrons. However it didn’t take away from enjoying our food - duck and lamb with a glass of Bordeaux each, followed by Creme brûlée!

A lovely traditional French experience with delicious flavours in every dish. Service was friendly and attentive. The summer take on the profiteroles with ice cream rather than creme patisserie was a very tiny disappointment.

Main courses weren’t exactly to our satisfaction. My wife’s fish of the day was served on a bed of lentils in which there were some small pebbles. This was mentioned to our waiter, who after discussing with the chef, said it was uncooked lentils - my wife disagrees! Overall, an above average experience for our 24th anniversary

A wonderful French restaurant. 4 ladies enjoyed 3 courses and wine. Wine pricey but food delicious. Nice service, not rushed. Terrine, boullabaise, goat cheese salad, slow cooked lamb, park fillet and all the desserts scrumptious. Highly recommended.

Lunch in Sydney at Bistro Papillion. Warmly greeted by the French staff, one can hear them talking away in their native tongue within the French styled theme of the restaurant which presents as a very welcome but unpretentious surround. I had the following: Beef Bourguignon Beef Burgundy, slow cooked in Red Wine with Carrots, Mushrooms and Thyme, Served with Paris Mash Tender chunks of tasty beef smothered in that delicious sauce with a subtle hint of the red wine tones, soft carrots and earthy mushrooms compliment the smooth Paris mash. That disappeared off my plate in no time and I had to drink the left over sauce, that ain't going down the drain! Caramelized Apple Tarte Tatin with Rum and Raisin Ice Cream Love the caramelized flavour on the tender apples, each bite with the cream was delicious. Love the flavour of the rum and raisin ice cream. A lovely way to finish. The food was delicious, a solid effort, though, I have eaten better French food.

About the restaurant

French chic

The dream of Bistro Papillon was established years ago when two Frenchmen found themselves working together in a restaurant in the UK. In 2010 this dream became a reality with the opening of Bistro Papillon in Sydney’s CBD. This rustic French restaurant is all about authentic and classic flavours. The restaurant tightly packed with dark wooden furnishing and retro French artwork (you feel as though you’ve wandered into a Parisian bistro). They have a menu devoted to French classics and restaurant ‘specialities’ where you will see the likes of escargots, tarte flambee, tartare de boeuf and onglet de boeuf. There is also a large a la carte menu which features a large selection of French faves like coq au vin, tarte tatin and lots of cheese.
