served sliced, roasted garlic jus, sauerkraut & leaves
Every time I fly to Launceston for work I eat at the Black Cow and the staff there know what I like to order and they make me feel special. I have never been there and it not be busy. Booking is highly recommended! Excellent atmosphere and the food is out of this world. Worth the cost and guaranteed an enjoyable, special evening.
Food was excellent and the service was really good too. Our waitress Julia was great, highly professional yet very personable. The Pork belly and NY strip steak were up there with the best I have had.
Best in its class. Will highly recommend. The quality of food, service and ambience was conducive to a wonderful dining experience. Well done.
A very welcoming place...excellent steaks and wine...we all had the roasted squid for entree which was a little chewy...the ladies had 200gm eye fillets and the men the large scotch fillets for maincourse...lovely sides of cauliflower au gratin and asparagus and delicious sauces to choose from...thoroughly recommend this place if a perfect steak is what you are looking for.
Excellent everything from the warm welcome and brilliant service to the amazing food. I can't wait to go back again. The slow cooked rump was succulent and tender, the sides generous and flavourful.
All members of our party thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Black Cow. Food was amazing and the service was perfect. We were lucky to be given a private room, making it all the better. Very pleased we didn't miss this experience.
Fantastic steak. Beautiful pepper sauce. Would go back just for the eclectic chocolate fondant! However...with exorbitant prices for the meals, one still has to pay extra for bread! And asking for tip at the cashier, rather than stating that the eftpos machine comes with the option to add tip!? Decor and mood are reminiscent of a cafe, rather than a fine dining restaurant, that these prices would suggest.
Cafe style - small noisy. Good food and service although expensive - fine dining prices with a cafe feel. You even need to buy the bread! Small wine choice by the glass. But... the food was good !
Glad we made a booking! Great food and service. The outside appearance was so simple - blink and you’ll miss it! The inside was warm and comforting. Our steak - medium rare - made absolutely perfectly! Downside - cuts of higher grade meats are big, and drinks in glasses are expensive. Otherwise, a wonderful experience.
My third visit to the bistro and this time I brought my hubby along! He’s still raving about that steak! Everything was just perfect ... thanks for another amazing meal.
This is a nice steak restaurant in the town centre. We had the rib eye on the bone with the cauliflower gratin and mushroom as sides which were all really good. It is a busy restaurant so best to book in advance!
Best steak I’ve had in a long time. Staff were friendly and attentive. Pricing will suit a range of budgets. Really interesting and varied wine list. Highly highly highly recommended!
Excellent food with attentive & knowledgeable staff. Great recommendations for serving sizes (we shared). Delicious meat & tasty sides that made the meal highly enjoyable. Highly recommend.
Superb restaurant which continues to deliver exceptional service and value. No brainer for me to hold my 50th birthday dinner there, always leave with a smile and great memories.
The (expensive) steaks that we ordered were not cooked to the correct ordered steak doneness- our wagyu scotch fillet which was requested to be medium rare was more rare, and our scotch fillet which was requested to be medium was actually medium well. A bit disappointing considering the price, especially as it is supposed to be a steak speciality restaurant.
Great steak and delicious sides, with friendly and attentive service
Perfectly cooked steak, exactly what we expected and received.
Absolutely fabulous Eye Filet!!!!! 10/10

There’s nothing like premium Tasmanian beef, dry aged, free range, grass fed and artificial hormone free. You can taste the difference. You can taste the quality. For a truly great cut of meat, Black Cow Bistro is the place to get it in Tassie. Located in the historic art deco Luck’s Butchery shop in Launceston the ‘up market’ steak house has a wide range of steaks with different flavours and tenderness. From the delicate and tender lean Eye Fillet and fat studded Scotch through to the hearty Rib Eye and textured Porterhouse and Rump, these are top quality steaks at Black Cow. With all dishes designed around fresh local produce, you are eating from the local land when you dine here. The menu is cleverly displayed with dishes ‘Before the Black Cow’ through to ‘To the side of the Black Cow’. All delicious.
Best dish: Eye Fillet Cape Grim Beef (Smithton, NW Tas) with Café de Paris butter and roasted honey brown mushrooms with thyme and garlic
