Service and ambience excellent. A small menu but obviously chosen with care. Starter of beef carpaccio was absolutely delicious and a perfect size to share as a first course. Mains (chicken friccasee and beef ribs) were also spot on, a perfect flavour sensation - although we found them to be quite small portions and without the starter we would have still been hungry. Didn't have dessert but the French pressed coffee was pronounced fantastic by my partner. We enjoyed the background music and the staff were all friendly and efficient. A hidden local gem that we will definitely come back to for a meal that is more upmarket/gourmet than the pub/Asian choices around the area.

Location great on canal. Lovely little restaurant with nice ambience. Service friendly although waited a while after being seated. They forgot one of our starters & after quite some time when they realised, were apologetic. After saying we didn't want it as the one starter we had was huge they served it anyway. Another huge starter so hoping for a break but main course served immediately. Unfortunately duck was overcooked & dry but replacement was nice. Ribs were OK - not fall off the bone as should be & a little bland but not too bad. Starters (croquettes & tartine) were the highlight as far as food goes. Even with the hiccups we encountered I would recommend.

Ambience was nice, but cant really call the food fine dining. Not sure if employing European waiters with French accents is a ploy to make it appear to be sophisticated. Ordered a steak, which was really well cooked, but when I asked what sides it comes with I was told fries and salad. I was expectting some kind of fancy potato recipe, not just chips and lettuce, (the salad was just lettuce). All in all the food was good, it just wasnt fine dining. My wife ordered a seafood stew. Again it was good, just not fine dining. Small touches like serving her plate with the soup stains scattered all around the rim instead of wiping it and serving it clean. Presentation is all part of fine dining. Anyway, in summary, not bad food, not fine dining

Quality of food and service is not worth it, waiter didn’t pour water in glasses just left a carafe on the table, tap water tasted heavily like chlorine and was undrinkable, waiter took a while to take plates between courses only when the next course was ready the empty plates were taken away, food was too simple 2nd course was a puff pasty with tuna/Mayo and pieces of meat from the main course beef rib? with jar sun dried tomato and a tomato after cracker (store bought), a couple of sauces were reused between courses, bbq sauce with the fried polenta tasted store bought but the tomato sauce it sat on was lovely, ratatouille with the salmon main was too spicy I couldn’t eat it, salmon was cooked west but not much flavour, sauce with salmon in a tiny pot was horrible it tasted like cream with chunks of onion it was inedible and tasted off it lacked any depth of flavour I only ate 30% of the main meal and left it, the waiter never took the plate until we asked it to be taken away (waiter didn’t realise putting a fork and knife together means the customer is done eating) , dessert was poorly executed the panacotta had too much gelatine but tasted ok however was sitting on swirls of store bought cheap chocolate sauce and the peanut brittle was too chunky and inedible, the chocolate mousse was inedible it tasted like it was made from store bought chocolate sauce and not actual chocolate it was way too sweet and lacking chocolate flavour.

Great restaurant for an intimate dinner. Not a huge menu but enough to choose from. Quality ingredients cooked perfectly and great service. We really enjoyed it and will definitely be back. Highly recommend.

Was a bit strange. Had the appearance of fine dining but the food was a bit basic, wine pairing good though. Definitely the use of praise mayonnaise and bbq sauce which was a bit gross. Was good for the price.

First time at this little restaurant. Really great food and desserts, with a reasonable selection of wines and cocktails. Great location next to the water in East Perth. On the night they were a little short on staff so things were moving a little slower than expected, but service was nonetheless friendly, polite and committed to providing good service. I will definitely return to The Blackbird.

The food was lovely, and the ambience great. Unfortunately the service lacked the level we were expecting. Appears that there was not enough staff. Drinks were ordered and had to be followed up on multiple occasions. I believe they should have come out before the main meal.

1st impression this is a busy place but it looks understaffed. Waited 15 minutes for 1st service but we were ready to order cocktails, wine and food. 20 minutes later entree served but still no cocktails or wine this arrived as soon as it was mentioned when entree served. Entree's were very nice. 1 hour and 10 minutes after entree served we were asked if we wanted the desert menu, replied still waiting on mains, panicked look. 10 minutes later meals x 3 arrived mine was the duck which looked like it had been microwaved and was just warm extremely hard to cut through skin and very chewy. I sent it back not wanting to eat it. Disappointed the chef or manager did not attend table to discuss the issue. Friend had Salmon which was over cooked and dried out, 24 hour cooked beef only success at our table. Table was not cleared during sitting except for entree plates. Wine bottle empty so sat with empty wine glasses and water glasses. Bill arrived charged for Duck and told have removed one of the entree's. Asked for entree to be added as they were fine remove Duck as it was not. Duck removed from the bill. 2 x Wait staff were very nice one was in training

Booked for a Friday night.. We were seated, quickly. We chose outside in the cold as I’m in a wheelchair and the only available tables were down a set of stairs and there was no ramp. Our friendly waitress offered us blankets. We ordered, beef carpaccio 3 cheese croquettes, 22hr slow cooked beef ribs and Canard a l’orange. The 3 cheese croquettes were quite tasty, the beef carpaccio was chewy and disappointing, the canard a l’orange was burnt in parts and gristly and the beef ribs (what I could eat) tasted quite nice however the fat was not rendered properly and the connective tissue was not gelatinous , this made the ribs inedible. All in all it was a disappointing evening. I will say however my White Russian was incredible

Delicious food, great value, quiet & intimate venue. Would definitely recommend & will go back. Ordered a-la-carte, but Would love to try the tasting menu with paired wines, I think this would be the best experience.

Celebrated Mothers Day outside overlooking the water. Great food, nice menu and service. Cushion on chairs could help, apart from that a truly lovely lunch. P.S I didnt ask for a cushion so they possibly had that covered!

I’m not sure if they have enough staff, we were seated and when they brought water we ordered & it took at least 15 min for our wine to come & close to an hour for our food. By this time we had drunk over 1/2 a bottle & were very hungry. After we ate they were slow to collect our plates & it was too late in the evening to think about desert & they were packing up the outside tables so we decided to go. The food itself was a bit disappointing & all in all we would not go back.

Atmosphere was amazing with soft lighting and quiet french jazz music, making a cozy comfortable winter night. The entrees were all good nothing crazy to stand-up. Mains were a little disappointing with the beef rib being of salted maybe being left in a brine to long. The fish (salmon) was ok, the skin was perfect but inside was a little under and was very cold in the middle but I didn't mind to much. The dessert was very sweet and rich, too much for the end of the meal I would have preferred something maybe lighter and more tarte which would have complimented the whole meal. Over all a very good and intimate, enjoyable night. 8/10 would comeback

About the restaurant

Fresh, fancy and French

East Perth has become a hot spot of cool restaurants, cafes and bars, which is a far cry from the days when it was full of factories and light industrial workshops. The gentrification of the area has seen million dollar-plus units and terraces line the river and a whole new generation of patrons are enjoying waterside dining. Blackbird Restaurant on Claisebrook Lake is one such venue and meets the high standard of its peers. Focusing on rustic European fare and quality ingredients, you can rock up for dinner and free tapas from Tuesday to Sunday or for Sunday lunch. With seasonal, table d’hote and South of France menus, there is plenty of choice. If you go for the fixed menu option, regulars recommend the piperade of paprika, capsicum, black savourine goats’ cheese and baked egg.

Best dish: Coq au vin served with Provençale rice.
