Meet the Chef

Lennox Hastie is the chef and owner of Firedoor, Australia’s only fully wood fueled restaurant. Lennox spent his early career working at Michelin Star restaurants across the Europe. After seeking out a small asador with a tradition of wood-fired grilling, Lennox began pushing the limits of cooking over an open flame. Returning to Australia in 2011, Lennox opened Firedoor in 2015 with the Fink Group. The restaurant works instinctively with fire with the wood treated as a fundamental seasoning.

    It was our first time at Fire Door and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a cocktail before hand and then opted for 'à la carte' menu and every dish was simply fantastic

    This place is awesome. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable. As a single diner I was offered half serves which is fantastic. The Head Chef was happy to answer questions as this place only uses wood to cook with which is very different to other restaurants. I had a really lovely time and would highly recommend visiting Firedoor.

    Attended the venue for a birthday function, ate the chef's menu which included 12 dishes. Each dish was well thought out, paired with tantalising ingredients which made the palate dance and drool with each serving. Although the servings were quite small (more bite-size rather than food coma size) it was a nice change of pace to enjoy not only the surroundings but the atmosphere, the scents and the company i was with. Dish after dish of unusual servings left me wanting more, the wait staff were super tentative and catered to our every whim. The wagyu & cod were cooked perfectly over the open flame style cooking and it was a treat to observe the Chef at work. At the end of the night, we were surprised with a special treat of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flamed marshmellow wraps served on sticks, which was the cherry on top of the evening. As we checked there was a minor hiccup with the bill but that was easily corrected by the server, and we grabbed a quick photo in the amazing foyer before eloping. It would be best to book weeks in advance as this venue was packed to the rafters, street parking is easily achievable, if you arrive a little early there is a cool little bar serving nice drinks which will tie you over. The venue is hard to spot from the street if it's your first visit but take note of the red circle logo hanging outside of the venue, and of course, follow your nose. All up was a great treat and everyone had a great night. Will be back. Thanks for the great experience!

    The tasting menu was executed very poorly, and took a very long time. The food is fine but not overly exciting. The entire sitting took over three hours.

    Beautiful special occasion restaurant. Only disappointment was being charged $18 for sparkling water which was poured from a jug and constantly topped up without us being aware of any charge.

    The atmosphere is amazing, with an open fire kitchen, all guests could see and smell all the actual happening. The food was delicious, we had the chef's tasting menu, beautifully curated with excellent use of flavour pairings and creative use of indigenous ingredients. We will definitely be back!

    My partner and I had been looking forward to visiting Firedoor, having heard such good things about it. We went to celebrate his birthday there on a weeknight. I'll start with positives: booking was easy, the pinot noir we had was delicious, the atmosphere and table settings were beautiful, and the food was outstanding. The negatives are really about service. We arrived at 8 and were asked to wait at the bar for our table and enjoy a drink but then we weren't given any menus at the bar to order a drink. We weren't seated at our table until 8.20 and there was no communication or apology for our wait. When we were seated at our table, we were given menus at last but the waitress proceeded to point at and explain the menu with her rude finger. Service through the evening was just inconsiderate with staff constantly preferring to serve and attend to a table next to us. Our neighboring table arrived after we did, and ordered the banquet menu as we did, but were regularly served their dishes before us. They weren't eating faster, nor were they polite, with the gentleman frequently belching. The front of house at Firedoor is disappointing and I'm surprised that a restaurant of such reputation can last with appalling service. I won't be going back. The food is memorable but there are plenty of restaurants in Sydney with quality food that provide a far better experience, with care for hospitality and service.

    Overpriced with so little food (ordered the tasting menu). Taste is below average and my wife and I have to cook our own meal right after we got home.
