Meet the Chef

Lennox Hastie is the chef and owner of Firedoor, Australia’s only fully wood fueled restaurant. Lennox spent his early career working at Michelin Star restaurants across the Europe. After seeking out a small asador with a tradition of wood-fired grilling, Lennox began pushing the limits of cooking over an open flame. Returning to Australia in 2011, Lennox opened Firedoor in 2015 with the Fink Group. The restaurant works instinctively with fire with the wood treated as a fundamental seasoning.

    The tasting menu was executed very poorly, and took a very long time. The food is fine but not overly exciting. The entire sitting took over three hours.

    Beautiful special occasion restaurant. Only disappointment was being charged $18 for sparkling water which was poured from a jug and constantly topped up without us being aware of any charge.

    The atmosphere is amazing, with an open fire kitchen, all guests could see and smell all the actual happening. The food was delicious, we had the chef's tasting menu, beautifully curated with excellent use of flavour pairings and creative use of indigenous ingredients. We will definitely be back!

    My partner and I had been looking forward to visiting Firedoor, having heard such good things about it. We went to celebrate his birthday there on a weeknight. I'll start with positives: booking was easy, the pinot noir we had was delicious, the atmosphere and table settings were beautiful, and the food was outstanding. The negatives are really about service. We arrived at 8 and were asked to wait at the bar for our table and enjoy a drink but then we weren't given any menus at the bar to order a drink. We weren't seated at our table until 8.20 and there was no communication or apology for our wait. When we were seated at our table, we were given menus at last but the waitress proceeded to point at and explain the menu with her rude finger. Service through the evening was just inconsiderate with staff constantly preferring to serve and attend to a table next to us. Our neighboring table arrived after we did, and ordered the banquet menu as we did, but were regularly served their dishes before us. They weren't eating faster, nor were they polite, with the gentleman frequently belching. The front of house at Firedoor is disappointing and I'm surprised that a restaurant of such reputation can last with appalling service. I won't be going back. The food is memorable but there are plenty of restaurants in Sydney with quality food that provide a far better experience, with care for hospitality and service.

    Overpriced with so little food (ordered the tasting menu). Taste is below average and my wife and I have to cook our own meal right after we got home.

    The service was the best I have experienced in years. My mother in law is anaphylactic to seafood and they accommodated her so well and did everything they could to make this happen. The food and drinks were amazing too.

    Great rustic theme from the decor, to the food, even the cutlery. Food was amazing, the set menu was extremely filling. For the special occasion, price is high.

    Good dining and overall ambience experience with main courses of quality beef, well prepared barramundi and lamb. Only slight negative was the fish skin wasn’t crispy.
