We’re definitely coming back & recommend House of Crabs to friends and family. We had a late booking at 10 pm but the staff gladly accommodated us & served us well.

Delicious crab with chilli and a side of chips. We also loved the lobster Mac and cheese- sooo creamy and yum!! Our server was a bit cold and grumpy

Fun and quirky place with really good seafood and amazing deals. The downstairs place is also great for a drink or two. Make sure you take advantage of the specials during the week

We had the Baller Plate for 2 which includes mussels, prawns, chorizo and crabs with fries and creole butter sauce. It's tasty but you have to "crush: very well the crabs to get food out :). The music is great, old times music and at a level we can have a discussion. The decoration is nice too. We will be back but maybe not take crabs as its too long to find the food in but you know it's crab, you can't expect anything else than that!

Food was alright but pretty expensive for what they were (500g of seafood with shells on is actually not a lot of food). The best thing about the restaurant is its funky decor.

Food wasn't as good as two years ago. Our crab hardly came with any sauce at all so we didn't even finish the bread (provided for dipping). Cocktails were okay but not worth it if wasn't 2for1 price.

Always heaps of fun and super messy! Then creole butter sauce and Cajun still the best. We ordered the baller platter for 2, it was good but we were expecting a tiny bit more.. it was just enough for 2. Would advise ordering an extra entree or 2. You also get sauce on the side with it which isn’t as good as in the bag!

I thought the food here was nice and affordable as part of the all you can eat special ($30 pp). However the service let the experience down for me as some of the staff working were not attentive and items were slow to come out.

Whilst they have changed their menu and the chicken karaage is delicious, their curry crab special on Thursdays is very ordinary! Bring back the chilli crab! ;)

Overall a good experience. Fresh seafood. New Japanese style menu is ok. Curry sauce could have done with more flavour/punch.

About the restaurant

A night of cracking crabs...

On the first floor of The Norfolk Hotel in Redfern you’ll find a quirky space of red and white booths, blackboard menus, fairy lights and seaside paraphernalia: canoes, beach umbrellas, crab net chandeliers, gas lamps, nets and heavy ropes. - the whole works. Designer Mike Delany has gone all out to set the seafood shack scene at The House of Crabs, allowing diners to demolish an array of crustaceans in a funky coastal setting. Even the bar has been remodelled to look like a boat. Sounds cool huh? It really is!

Get ready to throw all traditional dining manners out the window because at this laid back seafood eatery anything goes. All crabs come boiled in 500g sharing bags (chose from blue swimmer, snow or king), each one as cracking and tasty as the next. Other noteworthy dishes are without a doubt the chubby Redfern prawn roll ($9) and barbecue octopus taco ($6)...if you can fit them in.

So roll up your sleeves and get ready to get down and dirty while enjoying a serious seafood spread. Oh and you’ll definitely want to wear a bib, it’s nothing but messy crowd-pleasing fun at the House of Crab. Get excited!!

Georgia's top dish pick: Crabs boiled in Old Bay seasoning with extra cayenne - it’s a no brainer really.
