7.5/10This place is always very busy. Reservations are required. Service is okay, considering how busy the restaurant is. Food is tasty overall. Just a bit too salty and oily to me.

7.8/10Last time I was here was over 20 years ago and the place has barely changed! The food is good quality, authentic casual Japanese affair, and staffed with mostly Japanese people, which generally means the food is much higher quality. Having spent 15 years living in Japan I’m always EXTREMELY picky with my Japanese food, but this place never fails to please even the most hardcore Japanese food fanatic! Decent selection of sake.

6.5/10Tempura batter was very good -clean oil used, but tempura vegetables need to be cut thinner and the grouping together of eggplant slices became a bit of an oil sponge.

7.3/10Not as glam as some of the newer izakaya or ramen cafes but still manages to deliver a satisfying feed at reasonable prices.

165 Lonsdale St, 3000, Melbourne (VIC), Australia
Japanese-Style Comfort Food One of the oldest izakaya-style restaurants around Australia, Izakaya Chuji on Lonsdale Street in CBD Melbourne is all about two things — eating and drinking. Bring a big group of friends and order up. Sharing is the way to go here. There are izakaya-style sushi bar counters where you can take a gander at the day's freshest catch of fish and watch the sushi chef slicing and dicing away with utter precision. As you'd expect, it's all about fresh flavours at Izakaya Chuji. Start with beef tartare with raw egg before moving on to a hand roll or grilled dish. Prawn dumplings are popular as is the kushi platter, which includes a mix of chicken, beef and pork skewers. There are rice and noodle dishes as well, though sushi and sashimi aficionados will be tempted by the chef's selection mixed platter option. Wash it all down with a cold beer or top-notch sake. Best dish: Deep fried squid
