Always great. The Curry Goat was really good, but we can never go past the Butter Chicken... always amazing. The Chicken Tikka is also a standout.

Butter chicken is actually just chicken in tomato soup. Onion bahji was a plate full of crumbs, not patties. Rice is cracked rice which has an unusual consistency. Garlic naan is delicious. Ambience is non existent as they do a heap of deliveries and no one dines in. Also, their prices on their website and on The Forks website are very outdated. Expect to pay top dollar.

Has Kantipur changed hands? Not sure... the food was ok, the rice has changed - it’s now broken rice , servings of onion bhaji small, chicken tikka was decent size serving but while it was sizzling on the plate, the inside of the chicken was just warm (maybe should have microwaved for longer??) butter chicken was more like chicken in tomato soup but the malai kofta was good and creamy. Garlic naan was the best. Service was dismal, 3 people at the counter, but only 1 girl seems to be able to interact with patrons, the other stand behind the counter, prepare drinks and avoid eye contact. They do a huge trade in takeaway, but I think we’ve eaten in for the last time.

Great tasting Indian. Great service, fair price. They do a huge trade in Takeaway and eat in, for good reason! Best in the area.

Despite our booking, we got the last table of 4 by luck. The dining room was full and tightly packed in. 1 new wait staff on the floor and she was totally overworked, but still trying. A few things forgotten, but once the other tables left, she could breathe again and we didn’t feel so cramped. The suave young guy from out the back (impeccably dressed, so not a cook) did nothing to help the poor girl, just swanned about. This place does a roaring trade on uber eats - I counted no less than 20 going out the door in our 90 minute visit. The food is delicious and tasty, but the ‘decorative salad ‘ that the entrees are served with can be a turnoff - very daggy, so we’ll probably just stick to take away in the future.

The food was, as ever, excellent. The service was attentive. They put up a lot with us messing them around with changing bookings, numbers etc. All handled with aplomb.

About the restaurant

A taste of Nepal

Kanitpur is a much loved local that has been serving Caulfield for eight years. With a wide range of traditional Nepali and Indian cuisine, this warm and inviting restaurant is the perfect place for a family catch up or a casual mid-week meal. The Nepali dishes are the standout performers and we love the traditional momos, daal-bhat and chicken tarkari. Oh, and don’t forget to try the Country Captain - the royal dish of Nepal - a tender lamb curry and roasted potato with braised spinach leaves. This is a place where you can sample real, traditional dishes at really good prices.

Best dish: tibet de lama - Tibetan favourite, mixed lentils and roasted eggplant sauteed with cumin seeds, cooked with spring onion and herbs.
