Some of the best food we’ve had in Porto—top notch! We were welcomed so warmly—amazing hospitality which you would not expect from a restaurant attached to a hotel. Chef Margarida creates a magical experience with her presence and excellent food. We loved every second there. We highly recommend this place.
Dona Margarite is a good cook who is also very passionate about food and concerned about her guests and satisfying their food interests. She recommended several dishes and they were all expertly prepared and served. We arrived late and the restaurant was almost empty and probably ready to close, so we really appreciated her willingness to make us feel at home and to allow us to take our time. She prepared a wonderful octopus salad for us that was not on the menu--we'd been traveling for a week in Portugal and we were missing green salads. Not only was it a great chef's salad with lots of fresh lettuce and raw vegetables and a light vinaigrette dressing, the octopus was also very tender and flavorful because of the way she prepared it. But her final dish was the best--a chocolate brownie cake that was more like a souffle and hot out of the oven. She served it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream--so good! We were in a restaurant, but it felt like a home! Dona Margarite, Thank you for a lovely meal.
10 out of 10. The whole night was full of pleasure and delightment. Love to the owners. 1. Delicious Food The raw materials are really fresh. All the seafood and vegies. And s 2.
Spectacular traditional French food with a glorious Porto twist, made with the freshest ingredients and masterful skill. It was amazing to talk to and order directly with the chef and to have amazing wine service from her husband. Perfect and very memorable. Our one complaint concerns the new location, which is in a hotel. We had thought we would be eating at the bottom restaurant we saw here on The Fork, but the address we arrived at was a mid-level hotel, which felt quite cheap and not close to amazing level of the service and the food. It's not the kind of atmosphere that you want for this kind of food experience. I highly recommend eating at their original location...make sure you are going there and not the hotel The atmosphere very much affects one's dining experience at this level, and I would very strongly suggest that they either move their new location to one that fits the spectacular level of food and service, or just stay with the former location.
What a super restaurant. This is not fast food, the chef takes her time to prepare, cook and serve your selection, but boy was it worth the wait. The fish and shellfish were so fresh and the risotto rice was cooked to perfection. We’ll certainly go back to try more dishes.
Small 4-5 table restaurant with a single very charming and flexible chef (you enter through the kitchen, the tables are downstairs). Do book in advance, and be prepared for a leisurely meal. She prepared vegetarian and gluten-free entrees for our table—creative variations on the menu.
A truly lovely experience. We had just arrived in Porto and found this small but very warm place. The hostess was very inviting and had a delicious meal. Would recommend and revisit
Ogni volta che tornero' a Porto verro' qui. Per sentirmi come a casa e per assaporare la vera atmosfera portoghese. La proprietaria e' squisita, i piatti altrettanto. Non ne rimarrete delusi. Provate la francesinha!

Lovely woman with a lovely place, and the food was fab. Highly recommend!!!
Lovely welcome. Fab home made food an excellent service.
Worthy to wait, excellent service
Small and welcoming. Good food. Tapas in Portugal is not what it is in Spain. Try not to order too much to eat ;)
A delightful experience, Margarida is a generous host and the food was very enjoyable, especially the chocolate and raspberry cheesecake which was sublime.
A quaint intimate restaurant with a passionate chef and proprietress Margarite. The food was creative and delicious with a nice tasting of Douro and Port wines. Definitely a great memory of our time in Porto.

Dear Robert, We thank you for your visit, for your evaluation and for your words of appreciation and affection. We are happy and satisfied when our customers appreciate our dishes and wines, but also the service and hospitality we reserve for each one, individually. Come back whenever you come to Porto. You are always welcome to our Red House. Best regards, Margarida & Paulo
One of the best dining experiences I have ever had. Incredible food, incredible service, intimate setting, felt like I was being welcomed into someone's home. Favorite meal during my entire trip to Portugal.
This place is incredible, very personal and cozy. I am just grateful there are people that keep focused on being so kind, on collecting ingredients from local small farms and on cooking very good food. The food has the touch of love that is so rare to find. That was my second time there. The porto wine in the end was just perfect to finish an outstanding dinner. Congratulations.
Amazing!
Basic food, could have been to a lot cal supermarket and done it myself. Old building and cold with a heater that was all or nothing! Very small all sitting on top of each other. Would not recommend or return
La Maison Rouge 48
When you arrived and found that the building was old, small and cold and you did not like it, you should not have stayed. We want all our customers to feel good and comfortable in our space. To criticize that food is basic, because you have chosen to eat only a salad and cheeses at dinner, is a cruel and petty way of evaluating what we cook with professionalism, dedication and love. It is incoherent and unfair, because we always have hot meat and fish dishes to choose from. And if you chose to accompany the meal with water because you all four had tasted, for free, 3 different wines from the Reserva Douro, Reserva Grande and Vinhas Velhas and decided to order only one bottle of water for all, it will not be our responsibility! What I think is that it was a petty way of not having to pay for a bottle of wine. Because 3 samples x 4 people are 12 proofs of Douro wine of great quality, offered by the Chef! Regrettably, for certain people it is enough, and they feel that they no longer need to pay for more wine.

Our Restaurant & Wine Bar is located Downtown. The International Airport of Porto is about 15 km away. The Douro River about 1 km, the Atlantic Ocean and our best beaches are about 2 km.
La Maison Rouge 48 is a Douro and Port Wine Bar with a varied selection of DOC wines from these regions and from small producers. Serves Portuguese Tapas and some traditional Snacks and Recipes, DOP Cheeses, Hams and regional Sausages. We are located in the Historical Zone of the city of Oporto, between the Cathedral and S. Bento. We excel in the quality of our services provided to all our customers and in the quality of our products. The name comes from the description of the building - The Red House - and 48 is the door number. For reasons of marketing it has been translated into French by voting. Come meet us and taste our wines and snacks. You are welcome, enjoy your tasting! Thank you.
