Meet the Chef

His mother, Fatima, is from Ankara, and his father is from a small neighbouring village. After eventually returning to Melbourne, his mother Fatima Barut kept cooking big family meals, which often featured a dozen dishes. While he began cooking as a teenager, it wasn't until his early 20s that he took it more seriously. After working in Turkish restaurants across Melbourne, he joined Lezzet in Melbourne's inner suburb of Elwood in 2003, and bought the restaurant two years after. On his menu, you'll find dishes just like his mum makes them, like the spinach and feta filo pastry cigars. Other dishes are vaguely inspired by family recipes. Fatima Barut's charred eggplant becomes an eggplant salad with tahini, yoghurt and walnut snow. Lamb is also central to the menu, with Barut and his team breaking up six whole lambs every week.

    Food would be one of the best Turkish cuisine that we have tried out in Melbourne and we are from Turkey .. Most meat and bread are cooked in wood oven which is just make things even better

About the restaurant

The newly renovated Lezzet with its sandstone arches, dappled lighting & cushions scattered throughout brings a warm feel once you enter its doors.

A stunning back-lit bar sets the scene with Anatolian inspired cocktails on offer, and the state of the art wood fire oven is the star producing mouth watering meats & claypots.

Head chef & owner Kemal Barut has perfectly brought the tastes of the old traditions & modern ways together for a journey to be perfectly accompanied with a variety of Turkish wines on offer.

Lezzet is conveniently located on Brighton Rd in Elwood, at the beginning of Chapel St and a couple of minutes away from St Kilda and Balaclava.
