Meet the Chef

Picture of George Kohler.

George Kohler

George Kohler was appointed Head Chef in 2017 and is our 5th Head Chef in 35 years. After completing his apprenticeship with us 10 years ago he then went on to great heights at the legendary 41 & Berowra Waters, followed by Monopole and finally as Senior Sous Chef under Logan Campbell at Jonah’s at Whale Beach. Logan, by the way, was our Head Chef No 3. We do like to keep things in the family. George’s youth and vitality is infectious and he has a great understanding of our style and ethos.

As always - outstanding. An excellent typical atmospheric Italian restaurant of very high standard. Lucio, as always attentive and ensuring all patrons are happy and content. It was and always has been a great pleasure to step inside Lucios and feel like you are truly back in Italy. Lucio was entertaining two outstanding chefs from other first class restaurants. Says it all!!THANK YOU.
Thank you so much for your outstanding review Kim. Much appreciated by the whole team. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Kind regards Sally

The food was good. Wines and service ok also. But perhaps we had an unlucky night - Friday at 8.30 pm - in relation to noise levels. First we were put (3 of us), without our booking being checked (that was a major faux pas), in the lower level area, which is inherently a noisier space, next to a table of 10 who were in party mode. After two courses where we could had a hard time hearing our own conversation we complained and were moved to the upper area, which was better at first, but. as bad luck would have it, another large party next to us became very noisy and so eventually we complained directly to them and they quietened down a bit. Both large parties behaved extremely inconsiderately towards ourselves and other guests. This problem with noise really spoiled our experience of what was otherwise a very nice meal in an attractive visual environment.
Thank you for dining with us and for taking the time to write this review Charles. I appreciate your very fair scores, considering the noise issues you encountered. There is a certain amount of noise to be expected in a full restaurant, however it is rarely an issue of such concern at Lucio's. Our guests are usually much better behaved than these two tables appear to have been. It is very disappointing they continued to be so loud, despite our staff's entreaties and I am sorry it affected your enjoyment of the evening. Regarding quieter seating, all areas of the restaurant are virtually the same in terms of ambience structure. We find many guests have varied perceptions of which is the quieter area but it really comes down to the sound levels at adjacent tables, and yes I agree you were unlucky on this occasion. Just to clarify, your booking was not "checked" on arrival as you were the last table of 3 to arrive so staff were expecting you and knew your seating allocation. I hope we can welcome you back for a quieter experience. Kind regards Sally Galletto

Lucio himself came to take our order he is a big bold large personality and really makes the place. The other waiters took a while to warm up. Initially I thought they weren’t friendly but then they came around after a while. At first they made me feel uncomfortable as they didn’t seem that friendly. In the end they were very friendly. Oysters very fresh. Found a bit of scale in my carpaccio but oh well means it is real fish. Truffle pasta was pasta of the day. Mild taste. Truffle wasn't as aamzingas I thought it would be. Spinach was very tanniny. Decaf soya latte was nice. Atmosphere inside is nicer than looking in. You could be in some Italian restaurant in Italy. Has good atmosphere whereas outside looking in seems dated dark restaurant. Much nicer when sitting inside looking out. Seems very popular. Was fully booked Wednesday lunchtime. Very trendy people dining there and everyone dressed very well. Menu limited which us nice. Everything fresh. Nice neighbourhood restaurant. More upmarket than others around the suburb. Not cheap.

About Lucio's Italian Restaurant

Food, wine & art Lucio's has been serving exceptional Italian cuisine with a northern influence on this leafy Paddington corner since 1983. A constant recipient of numerous awards over the years, Lucio's continues to be recognised by critics, and enjoyed by customers for the fresh pasta made daily on the premises, traditional northern Italian cuisine (sometimes with a twist), outstanding service and attention to detail and eclectic wine list. The site originally housed the Hungry Horse Art Gallery and Restaurant, renowned for both excellent food and avante-garde contemporary art with such greats as John Olsen, Colin Lancley and Robert Hughes (before he decided he was more suited to the road of the art critic). Lucio has co-incidentally continued this harmonious tradition with great food and stunning Australian art. Best dish: mirrool creek lamb backstrap wrapped in silver beet served with cannellini bean purée, roast cipollini & watercress
