This Indian rest has been trading for more than 30 years with the same owner and I've been a customer for most of them. Excellent food with friendly service. Open for lunch & dinner 7 days except Christmas Day means they are their when I need them. Just a great place.

Always good but I would like a lot more heat (chillies) in the food. Everything is too mild. Love the dosa's especially. Appreciate the opportunity to bring my own bottle of wine. Recommended.

Hi. i have been earlier also at this restaurant. the food yesterday was not fresh at all. the staff were so tired and not interested at all to serve Th wholemeal paranthas were frozen , heated up and served rather than making fresh. Overall we and our friends were totally disappointed. It was not fresh food at all. i think HEALTH DEPARTMENT should go and check their place

Excellent, good proportions. Could have been better if there was one more to help with the orders, as he was running all around. Would like to see lunch specials for weekdays only as this would drive many business and office goers to them for quick meals

A long established restaurant in Crows Nest, this has authentic ambience and consistently good food. We dine there regularly and it was good to see a crowded dining room even though it was a Tuesday night.

Malabar is a reliably warm, friendly environment to eat at. The food is consistently delicious and filling. It’s one of those rare places you can book for a large mixed family group or a work dinner meeting and be confident that everyone will be happy.

I went with a friend who went to this restaurant on a regular basis as he used to work in the vicinity back in 1997. I was able to find out for myself but he assured me that that the food quality, presentation, flavours were as good as ever ! They do not fear competition for they thrive to be the best anyway. We'll definitely come back and strongly recommend this restaurant.

While not the most authentic Kerala food, as it was very much tailored to local tastes, the food and experience were really value for money and would definitely go back for another round.

The lunch special was a good value, and the first course of a freshly made dosai was nice and crunchy with a pleasantly spiced vegetable filling. The palak paneer was creamy with very firm paneer cubes, and the chicken chettinad was rich and spicy. Because the mains are served with rice AND Naan, the meal was quite filling. Plenty of good food!

About the restaurant

Smell the spices

The Malabar restaurants (you can find one in Darlinghurst as well) take their name from the Kerala region, known for its Indian spices such as pepper, cardamon, ginger, curry leaves and vanilla. This was the start of the famous Spice Trail, which went on to bring exotic flavours to every corner of the Earth. Today, that’s what Malabar aims to do: show diners a real taste of South Indian cuisine. Owner and chef, Mohammed Sali has had 22 years of experience and continues to personally pick all of his ingredients daily; peeling onions, slicing beef and grounding spices by hand. Mohammed’s creations are fragrant, filling and, as expected, spicy!

Dosai’s (crepe-style specialties) can be found on almost every table, along with a glass of creamy mango lassi, that other diners use to wash down the heat! You’ll also spy the happiness on children’s faces when they smell the garlic naan coming their way.

Best dish: bangalore dosai - hand-mashed potatoes sprinkled with chilli, sesame seed and coconut flakes
