Great service and food as always. The food was fabulous - dosai amazing as was the prawn curry and the roti - heavenly. The mixed vegetable curry was average - lovely sauce but very average vegetables. Gulab jamun with vanilla ice-cream...yuuuuuuuum! As was the South Indian tea. Great service. Lovely night:-)

Fry pod was great, service was good at time of ordering but after that was next to impossible to get a waiter’s attention. Prices are on the high side which is prohibitive for repeat business

We live in Paddington and Malabar at Crows Nest is one of our favourite restaurants. The staff are lovely and the food is amazing. I would never eat Indian food anywhere else. We prefer the Crows Nest Malabar to the Darlinghurst one. It's always worth the trip over the bridge. Malabar is a game changer.

We go to Marlabar restaurant each year for our sons birthdays in May. Both of our sons love the dosers and my husband and I love the curries. The food is always good, consistently we have never been disappointed. It has become a family tradition . We love it.

Malabar is one of our faves ! The food is consistently excellent, the service super friendly and very reasonably priced ! The only problem is having to decide between so many great menu choices, you need an extra stomach :)

Never disappoints! There is something for everyone with a good range of dishes that are really tasty and flavoursome. I just wish they did decaf coffee.

A local favourite, I have been dining at the Malabar for over 20 years and never been less than satisfied! Butter Chicken is a must. Try the Goan Fish Curry, the vegetable korma and palak paneer and the onion bajis... don’t forget the delicious dosai! Or get a banquet to try as much as you can! It’s all delicious - not too hot, not too mild - just right! The staff are very professional and obliging. And it’s a restaurant that still has real tablecloths, napkins and carpet!

A popular restaurant as there were so man patrons. Friendly helpful staff. A professional setup that worked! Choices were good and varied. Being a small birthday dinner for us, we were delighted with the attention to service.

About the restaurant

Smell the spices

The Malabar restaurants (you can find one in Darlinghurst as well) take their name from the Kerala region, known for its Indian spices such as pepper, cardamon, ginger, curry leaves and vanilla. This was the start of the famous Spice Trail, which went on to bring exotic flavours to every corner of the Earth. Today, that’s what Malabar aims to do: show diners a real taste of South Indian cuisine. Owner and chef, Mohammed Sali has had 22 years of experience and continues to personally pick all of his ingredients daily; peeling onions, slicing beef and grounding spices by hand. Mohammed’s creations are fragrant, filling and, as expected, spicy!

Dosai’s (crepe-style specialties) can be found on almost every table, along with a glass of creamy mango lassi, that other diners use to wash down the heat! You’ll also spy the happiness on children’s faces when they smell the garlic naan coming their way.

Best dish: bangalore dosai - hand-mashed potatoes sprinkled with chilli, sesame seed and coconut flakes
