As a local it was strange to eat on the tourist strip that is hardware lane but the food at Max was very very good. Good value too

Always good food and value. However, their Calamari never seems up to scratch. Have brought this to their attention and they say that it's the way it should be prepared.

This is one of our favourite places to have lunch with friends in Melbourne. Very extensive menu, but everything is done perfectly - from pizza, pastas, risottos, to steak, chicken and veal.

I would like to see non alcohol wines on the list or allow non drinkers to bring their own non alcohol wine and pay corkage if necessary.

The food was delicious and fresh, and the service extra good despite being super busy. Thanks for going the extra mile to ensure my dietary needs were met.

About the restaurant

One of Hardware's finest

Melbourne is known for its maze of lanes and alleyways, but there’s one lane that is a cut above the rest. Hardware Lane, with it's red cobble stone pavement, covered by a canopy of colourful umbrella’s, is famous for its alfresco dining. At night the laneway comes to life with live jazz music and fresh faced diners, and it is the perfect backdrop for Max Bar and Restaurant. At this joint you’ll find fantastic Italian/Mediterranean style dishes cooked with love and affection. On the menu are all the classics, spaghetti meatballs, arancini balls, as well as some exciting pizza and seafood dishes. This is the perfect place to relax after a shopping trip or a long day at the office. You'll feel like a true Melbourneite at this dynamic lane way hotspot.

Best Dish: gnocchi gorgonzola
