There are actually two izakayas on Baroona Rd, this is the one across from the Blue Room cinema. The place itself is quite serviceable. On an overcast winter day, we tried to get into the enclosed section, but Covid-related restrictions pushed us outside. This was for the better, as the inside part is dark, crowded and a bit dingy, while outside it is spacious and airy. With the gas heater it was very pleasant. Our Japan expert was perfectly satisfied with the food, us mere gluttons just enjoyed every morsel of it. The vagyu tataki and the sashimis melt in the mouth, the grilled eggplant is just wicked, and the gentle crackling under the teeth when eating the crab rolls is a surprisingly pleasant sensation. All of the cooked items were superb, but the edamame beans were a bit overripe and not as juicy as the ones picked a bit earlier. Food came pretty fast, as did the drinks. The cocktail list has many interesting items on it. The plum martini proved a nice, subtle take on the original. When not driving, I will try the Green Eyed Geisha. As nice as the draft Suntory is, its rather steep price will direct me to the bottled Sapporo next time. There will be a next time.

I have been here before, so I knew that it was great. A group of us went, we had many different things and they were all yummy. Everyone raved and we will all be back.

Great Japanese food with a good atmosphere considering how we had to be spaced for covid. Staff were attentive and helpful. The miso cod was particularly delicious

This restaurant looked really nice, but unfortunately the service was awful. I booked in advance and the server was seemingly irritated because my name wasn’t written in their scheduling book - which wasn’t my fault, as I had made a reservation online, so I’m unsure as to why the schedule wasn’t updated manually on their end. It wasn’t very busy, but the server made us wait while she sat other walk-ins down before us. When we were seated, we weren’t given any menus after waiting for 10 minutes. The servers were walking around and watching the tables but nobody had attended to us. The other tables received menus very promptly, even the tables seated after us. I had to get up to find menus but they weren’t the right ones. When we finally got the attention of another server, she was very rude and returned with a single menu despite the fact that there were 3 of us dining. When we asked her if we could please have more menus for each person, rolled her eyes and walked to get another 2 menus. After waiting some more, we decided to move to the sushi bar/train area because we felt very uncomfortable with the atmosphere. We were made to feel very unwelcome. There wasn’t much food on the train and the variety was even worse. When we tried to pay we had to wait another 10 minutes while servers walked past us and ignored us even though they were seemingly free. We had to go to the main register to ask someone to count the plates for us so we could pay and leave. The original server helped us and she was even ruder than before. I don’t normally write negative reviews for places as I feel very bad for doing so, but this experience was that uncomfortable that I felt it was necessary. I have never been treated like this in a restaurant before. I tried to be courteous by booking ahead and our entire group was very polite. It doesn’t make any sense to me to be treated that way and it was very disappointing as we were trying to have a nice family dinner.

Full a la carte menu is not available until 5:30 although bookings start earlier. Limited selection on train early but items ordered from the sushi menu which is available early were fresh and tasty. Scallop nigiri was a highlight. Booth seating inside near train was popular with lots of families with children for an early dinner.

This is the 3rd time I have been to this place. The food is amazeing as ever. The food is small in portion compared to price but acceptable. The katsu pork that I have was not so good. Over cooked.

This is definitely our FAVOURITE choice for ‘date night’ - ask the manager to make you his sake caipirinha (not on the menu but tell him Liz & Abbe sent you!). And do NOT miss the wagyu aburi. Delicious!

The food and surroundings were excellent. The waiting staff seemed bored, disinterested and I almost felt that my daughters and I were an inconvenience to them for being there. A simple smile and minimal enthusiasm is all I ask. It was a real shame, first time I’ve not given a tip in an awful long time!!

Seating for 2/4 at table was on stone wall with no back. Small dishes came out one at a time rather than at once as per a degustation. Drinks about halfway through. Food was ok, but not great so not worthy of price. Beautiful setting but pop music, even if Japanese, detracted from setting.

Located in the in the bustling restaurant hub of Rosalie Village in Paddington rests Moga (‘the modern girl’), an exciting modern Japanese eatery with a superior edge. This informal Japanese diner has got hot coal grilled meats, market fresh sashimi and sushi as well as salads, soups and tasty gyoza. All the dishes are beautifully presented and trust us they taste as good as they look. Dine alfresco in the tranquil garden space, inside in the modern beautifully decorated dining room or up at the circulating sushi train - there’s something for everyone and every occasion. For the ultimate accompaniment try one of their sake inspired cocktails. For superior sushi, dine with the modern girl.
