In the past five years at One Penny Red, RJ Lines has created and delivered acclaimed and popular menus that includes lunch, dinner and a bar menu for Vernon’s Bar on the first floor of the building. He has been invited create and hold food stalls at numerous festivals and is often an invited guest at Sydney food events.

This is the 2nd time I've been in 2 mths. I was surprised to find quite a few changes from the June to July menu. Both experiences were equally as good. Food service & ambience were impeccable. Thank you

The Sunday roast was fantastic, all four of us ordered it and we were not disappointed in any way. Such a lovely room and a great team. I love the wine list here also.

About One Penny Red

Spudtacular. Forget the #healthyeating instagram posts when you come to One Penny Red, because at this heritage listed site (once a former post office) it is all about the spuds. And boy are they spectacular. Leave your paleo, atkins, dukan, no carb and raw food diets at the door and get stuck into a bowl of roughed up, crunchy, salty and spicy deep fried potatoes...we still have dreams about them. These tatties have been treated with some serious TLC by chef R J Lines who boils, drains, bashes and crisps the spuds until they are golden like a fiery sun. But it’s the finishing touch of peppery, fennel and cumin spiced salt dusted on top that takes these babies to the next level. Okay, enough about the spuds, there are other reasons to check out this Summer Hill restaurant. The downstairs restaurant offers an array of Mediterranean driven share dishes while the upstairs bar is home to a casual, more snack menu - both equally as delicious. One Penny Red doesn’t do fancy or fussy food, instead, generous, earthy, comfort food in a companionable, easy-going, well-run sort of place, perfect for both big nights out or quick dinners with friends. So while traditional mail delivery as we know it is dying, One Penny Red has brought new life and energy into the handsome post office building - it’s just a service of a different kind, one that we don’t expect to die out. The spuds alone will keep the people coming back. That’s spudtacular. Best dish: Crispy, spiced salt potatoes
