Giovanni was always destined to cook. Born in Sardinia, he arrived in Australia in 1992, aged 20, full of enthusiasm and passion for the unique flavours of his homeland. At Pilu at Freshwater, Giovanni uses authentic products imported from across Italy, together with fresh local produce, presenting a menu that is refined and innovative whilst maintaining the strict traditions of the cuisine of his island home.

This was my 3rd time at Pilu so I was already going in excited to see a new menu. But the 5 course degustation undeniably blew me away beyond my steady high expectations. I was utterly speechless, especially with the Sardinian pastry dessert. I will be coming back here time and time again.

A lovely location. Degustation was excellent. We had the 5 serves and while the individual serves are small we both felt full at the end. Having the degustation is a romantic way to dine as it stretches out the dinner and you don't feel rushed. Each dish creates a separate talking point. We didn't choose the matched wines as it was lunch time but I am sure that would add to the adventure.

Very friendly welcoming service by wait staff. Meal for foodies as they go into detail about every dish that is presented in the set menu. I could see the attention to detail on each dish. It was my birthday and they gave me a complimentary birthday brownie at the end. Very memorable meal and experience.

Walk up the stairs of the grand weatherboard beauty and you’ll feel like you’re visiting your friend's beach house for dinner. Sit down in the window seat with point blank views of the beautiful beach with some crumbed smoked eel balls with baby mussels and you’ll quickly remember that you’re in the very capable hands of Pilu himself, with his years of expertise and modern flair making its way into each and every dish. Pilu has character and charm but oozes warmth and comfort. The desserts are almost as breathtaking as the views so do yourself and favour and order the corbezzolo honey mousse, spiced sponge, roasted macadamias and a Sardinian beer sorbet. It will be true icing on the cake after a memorable meal and superb service. Best dish: corbezzolo honey mousse.
