Rocco moved to Australia in 1998. In 2004 he set up his own Restaurant - Wine Bar in Beechworth, North East Victoria, the acclaimed ‘Wardens Food & Wine’. In 2009 Rocco was the recipient of “The Age Good Food Guide Wine Service Award” as well as rated by “The Age Melbourne Magazine” as one of the top 100 most influential people. Rocco was working as Director of Wine at Vue de Monde, indisputably one of Australia’s best Hospitality groups.

A good night had by all. It was a quiet Wednesday evening so would anticipate the atmosphere would improve as the venue fills up. Great front of house and overall high quality service. A nice, wide and variety, menu to cater for all tastes. For me, the octopus starter and lamb main were standouts.

Even though the restaurant is still new, we did not notice any teething problems. On the contrary, service was exceptional, warm and friendly hospitality and we felt at home straight away. We just left it to Rocco to feed the 7 of us and fantastic food just started landing on our table. We were well fed and this place is great if you are vegetarian (lots of options) or do not want a meat centric meal. The food was different with a hint of Italian, contemporary, really interesting and tasty. Will come back without hesitation and have already spread the word.

we first heard of Project 49 whist in Beechworth, where they have a cafe, we booked and arrived a little early, which was ok, we were at that time unaware that there were two venues the cafe wine bar and next door the restaurant, we were seated and my pet hate is to be facing a wall (which is a big mistake a lot of cafes and restaurants make the food was limited in choice only 3 mains, of choice 4 starters (share) 4-5 entres the wine list was also very limited, we then was told by Rocco (proprietor) they had only been open 2 days and they had a lot of work to do building the menue and wine list, we enjoyed the experience and will certainly go back (i will not go to a cafe or restaurant to look at walls i go for the ambience not walls) the fit out requires character adding nicknaks etc to give it some meaning, the the sand blasted stark brick walls have been done over and over, the venue will be good in time once the menue is built on this is worth a visit again
