We visit from Perth every few years and Punch Lane is the first place we visit for dinner. In the past they have fitted us in before going to the theatre . So welcoming and wonderful food. Our favourite place

Tremendous service. We’ve been before with wonderful food. Not quite at their best tonight but we’ll be back.

Beautiful food, beautiful service, beautiful wine We had the tasting menu and one of our guests had a baby sitter issue and had to leave early, they altered to speed and organised a takeaway dessert so she could get away. Could not ask for better.

Loved the older style building and architecture. It felt really cosy and intimate! My only comment would be that I'm vegetarian and there was only one option on the menu that I was able to eat.

Excellent mains, gnocchi was particularly good. Atmosphere is intimate, though a little dated. Would return again

Great dishes, however, portion a bit small for what you pay for. Every single component was absolutely delicious!

Service, and atmosphere was great. All but one dish was disappointing, as the menu said the dish would be “charred octopus”, but the octopus was clearly just pan fried or blanched with no charring at all. I had alerted the waiter of this, although we finished the dish as we weren’t too picky about it. Waiter was apologetic and said he would report it back to the kitchen.

About the restaurant

Pack a punch...

So does Punch Lane pack a punch after almost two decades of service? Certainly does. Positioned at the top end of Bourke Street, this Melbourne treasure has been a Melbourne institution for years, welcoming good food and wine lovers into it’s cosy, intimate European setting night after night. The dining room is surrounded with timber, leather accents and red chairs - it’s the kind of place you feel the need to light up a cigar and sip on a brandy.

During the day the restaurant is a popular setting for lunch meetings, with an a la carte menu or an express lunch offering two courses with a glass of wine and coffee to finish (for $39 - not bad!). The food is contemporary Mediterranean with occasional Asian and Middle Eastern inflections and as a restaurant that has been at the forefront of Melbourne’s cheese platter culture, Punch Lane is the perfect place for theatre-goers to have a feed pre show. With warm and welcoming service, you’ll feel snug as a bug in your excellent hospitality doona, this old world city bistro knows how ti impress.

Best dish: cheese platter
