Service was really great and it was great to be able to pay separately rather than one bill per table as a lot of restaurants do.

I took my daughter and granddaughter for a birthday treat and had the high tea and teddy bear tea for the little one. The high tea is way over priced for what you get, $40 per head for 3 ribbon sandwiches, 1 scone and 4 or so petit fours each. We had coffee to start and were charged extra for a cup of tea once the food arrived - seriously??! So the bill was over $100. The staff, although pleasant were clearly stressed with the holiday crowd and seemed very understaffed, so there were long waits to get served, to receive our food and then to pay and leave, not what you need with a 3 year old. I would not recommend the high tea at all, but the Shingle Inn is an historic and pleasant venue for a coffee.

Every year at Christmas I come to the Shingle Inn at City Hall for the nostalgia of Christmas past. I looked at the review I did last year and unfortunately the problems that existed then have not been recified. Service is still appalling. 30 mins just to get an order taken and then a futher 45 mins before our two meals arrived, leaving us 15 mins to eat. When we asked the waitperson what was going on as we had an appointment to go to, we were firmly told by her that they were busy & we just had to wait. No attempt at being polite at all and no apology. The food when it arrived was ok but due to the service issues we had to forgo the sweets that Single Inn is renown. Took home a fruit that was so dry I suspected it had been baked the day before. Lasty the carpet was fifthy and a general clean and polish up is needed. Most of the past elegance has gone but on a positive note I was glad to see the uniforms had returned.

Sorry but our experience was not good, we have had family get together there before and all has been good. We booked online for 12.30pm.and were not told when we were seated there was a function booked for 2pm. We were nagged to order quickly, table was not cleared properly, drinks were slow, meal was ordinary, then we were told about function and order our coffees, final insult coffees were bought to us in takeaway cups, so we were rushed to leave, we had were not happy. We have did this before at shingle in town hall but not happy this time.

I would normally rate this place higher, but the service was really off this day. We were on time for our booking and were served champagne right away, but we waited well over half an hour for our high tea sweets and savouries. I would have forgiven this but our tea had not arrived even an hour an a quarter after we had nominated what types we wanted. As we had to get back to the office we told the lady who fixed our bill at the end to tell the kitchen to cancel our tea, she was very good about it and did her best to make up for it with cake.

What a terrible experience! I have booked high tea for 3 people and Im sure I wont be cominb back to this place. The quality of food is shocking, the ribbon sandwiches were bland, petite sweets tasted like it came from some cheap corner bakeshop.
