We always treat ourselves to a meal when in Brisbane at Shingle Inn at City Hall. So unique with a lovely environment and staff dressed in 1930s dress. The food was excellent. Very few staff so had to look for staff to get another cup of tea (as we noticed others doing also). Being Christmas eve though we were patient. Really recommend

Away from the hustle and bustle of Christmas shoppers and tourists. Staff very welcoming on entry. It took a while to be served but once done we didn't wait long for our meal. I had the vege sandwich which was very tasty. My friend had her BLT. Both fresh.

The Shingle Inn used to be a special place with a good atmosphere, good food and a touch of class. Increasingly, its good reputation has declined because now there is little finesse as there is a shortage of staff, long waiting times and very generic food at high prices. Please bring back the charm, good food and service of The Shingle Inn which is still fondly remembered but sadly missed.

Maybe some more savory things and less sweets on the top plate. Scones were very nice though and so fresh.

To be honest, we were underwhelmed by the experience, which is very disappointing! To spend $42 per person on a High Tea experience for my mother's 82nd birthday, and to only have two ribbon sandwiches of each type served for four people, no other savoury items, and also no mention of my mother's birthday (which was contrary to the advertised information re birthday cake etc.) I found to be extremely disappointing and definitely NOT worth $42 per person (for four people). I would not go back, even though the atmosphere is lovely and the staff were very polite, I believe it is very busy, noisy and you are made to feel that you need to rush out to make room for another group.

The restaurant was understaffed. The Caesar Salads with smoked salmon we ordered were acerbic - the worst I have ever experienced. We left before sweets as they did not return to take our order.

Service was really great and it was great to be able to pay separately rather than one bill per table as a lot of restaurants do.

Every year at Christmas I come to the Shingle Inn at City Hall for the nostalgia of Christmas past. I looked at the review I did last year and unfortunately the problems that existed then have not been recified. Service is still appalling. 30 mins just to get an order taken and then a futher 45 mins before our two meals arrived, leaving us 15 mins to eat. When we asked the waitperson what was going on as we had an appointment to go to, we were firmly told by her that they were busy & we just had to wait. No attempt at being polite at all and no apology. The food when it arrived was ok but due to the service issues we had to forgo the sweets that Single Inn is renown. Took home a fruit that was so dry I suspected it had been baked the day before. Lasty the carpet was fifthy and a general clean and polish up is needed. Most of the past elegance has gone but on a positive note I was glad to see the uniforms had returned.

Loved the atmosphere and the original woodwork etc. Brought back many memories of visiting there in earlier times.

Great place to meet friends for special occasions or just morning tea. Love the authenticity of the original restoration of the furniture & artworks.

Unfortunately, our booking was not acknowledged as it should have been. It was for 10 people with another small group booked by another colleague. We arrived on time but were told there would be a 45 min wait for food because they were full up. I reminded the lady that we had booked and had even provided some detail in our booking about the children we were with and how much we would be spending. She attempted to say, it could be 30 mins? or possibly less but couldn't guarantee it. We left and had to find somewhere else to suit all - basically went over to the Pig & Whistle and spent over $300.

Service was slow, half hour wait for 5 serves of toasted sandwiches. Nice food but nothing amazing and over priced for what you get.

The atmosphere is always lovely at Shingle Inn. It was a busy morning and the service was a little slower than usual, but overall it was a most enjoyable experience.

I go to the City Hall at Christmas to remind me of visits as a child - a refined and elegant experience. Other than the original decor, there is nothing to remind you of the past. The service is chaotic and unprofessional. Gone are the immaculate uniforms, they have been replaced by grubby tee-shirts. Only a couple of the old favourite menu items survive. After waiting 50 minutes we did finally get some food - which was enjoyable but the entire visit was spoiled by the service. It is a pity, as this could be a fantastic iconic dining experience in an amazing setting but some real changes need to made, not by looking forward but looking back!

1 of 3 meals not delivered to the table at the same time. When brought to the attention of the staff it still took some time before 3rd meal was delivered to the table. The Shingle Inn waived the cost of the 3rd meal plus 3 drinks and offered another free drink which we all declined. Such a shame that this icon of Brisbane is now so poorly staffed and the meals not up to the standard of the original establishment.

Disappointed in sandwiches on high tea platter..not as described..three of them seemed to be the remnants of the kitchen..cheese and chutney. .for the price..did not find value in a rare for us splurge.

About the restaurant

Time for Tea

Originally located on Edward Street in Brisbane, Shingle Inn City Hall was one of the foremost coffee houses, renowned for its decadent cakes, beautiful beverages and stylish surrounds. Recently reopened – and as a statement to the old – the new Shingle Inn is a celebration of all that was. Catering for everything from hen’s nights to Australia Day events, this location is a must see for those visiting Brisbane. Their cakes are of the most superior quality, and the environment is wonderful for all ages to appreciate. Serving specialised afternoon teas, ribbon sandwiches and good old-fashioned clotted cream and preserves, it would be hard to find somewhere that nurtures you from within like this venue. Children under 12 can enjoy the Teddy Bear Afternoon Tea, and an array of 15 teas and an extensive wine list accompanies the beautiful coffee that is made with their own single-roast grind. Make sure you take the time to stop, and relax at the Hall.
