The paella out the front looked great for lunch takeaway but what we received from the kitchen was dry and underwhelming. Sangria was good service fair.

Food was above average, but quite pricey relative to portion size. The main criticism was service, which was nonexistent. One of the waitresses was blunt, rude, and snappy. If you're that unhappy, perhaps get another job? The two other waitresses that served us were just okay.

Some of the food was excellent e.g. the chorizo & calamari dish, the meatballs. However the baby squid on skewers was very disappointing for the price, just a few small bits of squid with pieces of pepper. The service was excellent. The Rioja reserva was lovely. Overall experience was good but a little overpriced.

About the restaurant

Simply the best

Simply Spanish has become so popular that they’ve recently opened several other eateries, including a cheerful little restaurant in Melbourne CBD on Bourke Street. It’s just as its name implies – simple Spanish favourites cooked to perfection. After just one bite of the award-winning paella, you’ll feel as if you’re back in the seafront restaurants in Valencia. There are authentic Spanish beers as well as a thirst-quenching house sangria, filled with chunky fruits and spicy red wine. Roomy outdoor seating is available, dotted with bright red and yellow chairs while the inside is an explosion of neon bulls, green glass bottle lights and blackboards with the day’s specials. Start with some tapas, including the fried goat cheese balls and gluten-free lamb cutlets, then move onto a gourmet paella which is cooked to order and served in a traditional pan. Make sure you leave room for the churros with cinnamon sugar and chocolate vodka sauce though! Is your mouth watering yet?
