Meet the Chef

Born and raised in San Francisco, Chase Kojima’s passion for food started at a young age under his father, a talented chef, and his grandfather, a fisherman in Japan. His distinct palate was shaped by traditional training and American upbringing. Before opening Sokyo in 2011, Chase led kitchens all over the world for Nobu restaurant group including Las Vegas, Dubai, London, LA and the Bahamas. Chase then moved to Australia and has worked with The Star on various restaurants.

    We had the tasting menu - each dish well presented and good balance of flavours and textures, especially the ocean trout with asparagus and little highlights of crispy elements. One minor criticism was the trout had not been pin boned fully and three small bones encountered.

    Very disappointed with how we were not informed at booking nor upon arriving at the restaurant of the temporary menu change due to Covid-19 limited opening. We booked a month in advance and found out only after we were seated and served water that they only had a set menu for $120pp that served some things that aren't on their usual menu. Most of the usual favourites were no longer being served. The wait staff were unprofessional, rude and had a poor attitude when we asked when or if they would bring back their normal menu. They had quite alot of staff on for the reduced amount of customers due to social distancing but we still had to wait long periods of time to order and get the bill. Very poor experience and while it is understanble they have temporarily changed their menu given the Covid situation customers should be informed at the time of booking.

    We have been to Sokyo many times in the past and enjoyed our dinner there. With the COVID-19, we are forced to have degustation, most disappointing was the wagyu beef, it was so tough, chewy, that you are mainly exercising your jaw. It wasn't just one serving was like that, all 3 servings were the same, one swallowed the wagyu and I swallowed 2 pieces. At $120 per person, we would have thought the wagyu would be of better quality hence our disappointment. The manager and waitress said they will let the chef know but didn't give us a discount or any thing complementary to the meal.

    Went there after the ease of restriction post covid lockdown wjere they intl serve degustation menu. Both my partner an I did not feel like a valued customer. We did not even have time to even look through the menu and was told 'we only have degustation menu today, the menu is the same anyway, would u like us to get started' Waiter did not even ask if we would like to order any drink! And he was in a rush to serve our first course straight away as if he was in a hurry for us to finish our meal and leave. Food was disappointing given the price. Sashimi and dessert were OK, but the rest of the course are a hit and miss

    We booked a 10am seating for breakfast but the buffet started to close at 10.30am. They really should tell people in advance when booking as this made the dining experience awful. Couldn’t enjoy the meal and take my time. Especially when you have kids and need to settle them first.

    One of my favorite places to go for breakfast! Food is always lovely, service is also really good. I wish they would have a buffet for lunch too. Love Sokyo.

    Love the breakfast at Sokyo. The traditional breakfast is delicious and good value with the buffet. Very cold in the restaurant though, bring a jacket!!

    Breakfast was such a pleasant surprise. Definitely value for money and service was amazinggggg! We came at the latest time for breakfast (10am) and felt a little rushed towards the end as they were packing up and prepping for dinner service. Pastries and fruit stopped being refilled, so we missed out on a little, but that’s just because we’re slow eaters haha. Would recommend going at an earlier time. Overall, great experience, will definitely be back!

    Food was of exceptional quality. A little disappointed that there’s only continental + compulsory ala carte option now. Would have been nice if they bring back the continental only option. That said, I’ll go again and would recommend them, perhaps skip dinner the night before.

    Bit expensive but food was ok. Dessert was next level good. Staff took 20 minutes to settle my bill, not sure where they were or what they were doing but the restaurant wasn't even full

    Food was nice but limited menu and it was a lot of money for very small portions. I have factored in that this is one of the best restaurants in Sydney. Service was awful. We constantly had our menus removed from us when we weren’t done with our ordering. Water was not topped up at all and when dishes were done, plates were not cleared when new dishes were served. Manager of the place wasn’t warm in welcoming guests or bidding goodbye. The food could not make up for the poor service.

    Delicious food! I recommend going as a group as it's best to order many dishes to try. Must get the crispy tuna rice.

In the Land of the Rising Sun When it comes to unique Japanese in Sydney, Sokyo has bragging rights. Firstly, their super-star chef Chase Kojima is a California-raised Japanese prodigy cook, who spent the better part of his young life in a kitchen. He’s cooked all over the world and settled in Sydney where he’s developed years worth of special knowledge of the local fish supply. His menu is an ultra-modern fusion of Japanese, pan-Asian and contemporary western cuisine. Sokyo also get to rub in the fact that they’re the only place in Sydney that does Japanese-inspired breakfast.
