Meet the Chef

Born and raised in San Francisco, Chase Kojima’s passion for food started at a young age under his father, a talented chef, and his grandfather, a fisherman in Japan. His distinct palate was shaped by traditional training and American upbringing. Before opening Sokyo in 2011, Chase led kitchens all over the world for Nobu restaurant group including Las Vegas, Dubai, London, LA and the Bahamas. Overall great service, very welcoming and on point. Most dishes were great, but sushi was just a tad above average, we were expecting to be taken back to Japan, but it didn’t quite get there. We had a great time, would certainly return.

Food was amazing, service not so much. There’s usually a delay with bookings which is annoying, booked for 9:30, table ready at 9:50. Ordered lots of cocktails but it was delayed, they even forgot to bring out one round. Overall, worth it for the quality of the food.

We enjoyed Sokyo and the service and ambience were very good. We ordered the bugs which were so delicious we ordered a second lot which were not of the same standard as the first - very disappointing!

Beautiful food but just wish that the atmosphere a little bit more intimate and the music a little bit softer.

90 minute booking time for dinner is ridiculous! While ultimately I was accommodated, I would have preferred to have avoided the hassle regarding how long I could have the table. On a previous visit I felt turning over the table was more important than my enjoyment. The food is very good, it deserves more time to be enjoyed. Maguro Tataki and Bay Bugs standouts amongst numerous good dishes. Wine service rates an honourable mention too.

Service could be improved - it took ages to get cups refilled and when we finally managed to flag down service, they only refilled some cups and left some empty

Great food and service. The only downer was that the banquette seating by the window was quite uncomfortable. I felt like my lower back was unsupported the seat wasn't deep enough that I kept sliding off it

About the restaurant

In the Land of the Rising Sun When it comes to unique Japanese in Sydney, Sokyo has bragging rights. Firstly, their super-star chef Chase Kojima is a California-raised Japanese prodigy cook, who spent the better part of his young life in a kitchen. He’s cooked all over the world and settled in Sydney where he’s developed years worth of special knowledge of the local fish supply. His menu is an ultra-modern fusion of Japanese, pan-Asian and contemporary western cuisine. Sokyo also get to rub in the fact that they’re the only place in Sydney that does Japanese-inspired breakfast. For a truly unique experience, come and enjoy their miso-flavoured eggs Benedict, or their great big "sumo breakfast" featuring a marriage of sausage, edamame and roast potatoes. Mouth watering yet? They also do a la carte sushi and sashimi for lunch and dinner, a bounty of vegetarian choices, and a pre-show menu that surveys all their greats. So take a seat in their moody chic dining room and enjoy the sounds of resident DJ while you let Sokyo treat you. Best Dish: dengakuMan
