This place truly is a gem. We had a fabulous night here. Decided to book on a whim for fathers day for my husband due to their unique advertising on Instagram and great reviews. When we arrived I must say we were a little skeptical however we were instantly warmly greeted and taken to our table. The service was 10/10 and the food was amazing. We had a great night and plan on returning soon. Make sure there is panna cotta next time please....

We had a group of 9 friends catching up. Our server was amazing, she remembered everyone's orders, remembered peoples drinks, was managing our table and all other tables all by herself and she did a fantastic job. 100% would dine here again.

My chicken was well over cooked but the potato gems were amazing. Glad we tried and while the stuff were amazing, won’t be coming back.

We've been to The Gem a few times now, and every time has been excellent. The BBQ first and foremost, as well as the attentive, friendly service, plus the bonus of live music in the bar area and the quirky western and rockabilly ambience, make this a perfect spot for events like a family birthday party (upstairs), or dinner with friends (meat sweats/food coma guaranteed). Every time we eat there, we say "We need to come back here more often ... and eat slightly less," which is a great sign.

Food & service excellent. Vegeterian options were available, surprising as its an American BBQ place

About the restaurant

Unpretentious dude food

Way before the American style BBQ or ‘dude food’ became a ‘thing’ there was Gem Bar and Dining, who imported a custom made klose pit from Houston, Texas to ensure they were delivering the most authentic Southern style cuisine. This unpretentious and customer focused venue has gained a reputation for serving up some of the best low and slow BBQ food in Melbourne. Since opening in 2012 the Gem has been attracting diners for birthday bashes, family get togethers and quick mid week meals. Remaining true to the classic pub staples, the Gem dishes up things like sliders, Southern fried chicken, BBQ meats and sides, as well as steak and other pub classics like beer battered fish and chips. Whether you’re a carnivore or vegetarian, the folk at Gem Bar will have something to suit. Be sure to check out their specials and deals like ‘The Gem Birthday special’ whereby if you dine with 10 or more people the birthday boy eats free. As if that’s not enough, you can also catch live gigs here too.
