Meet the Chef

For Chef Dylan Cashman, food is life. His passion translates to his menu, which celebrates locally grown, sustainable produce. Dylan's early experience as a kitchen hand in his hometown of Crescent Head in NSW ignited his love of cooking. He emerged on a culinary learning spree in the reputable kitchens of Sean's Panaroma, Cottage Point Inn and Paper Daisy with Ben Devlin before returning further north as head chef at Fins at Kingscliff, where he landed his first hat. His biggest achievement was opening his own restaurant. The Blue Door on 5th in Palm Beach, launched to great acclaim. It was named Best New Restaurant for Queensland and was listed in the Good Food Guide with one hat.

We were in the Herring Room tonight during the social distancing restrictions and the Herring Room staff went out of their way to adhere and make us feel comfortable. The food was as always fantastic. Please support these guys through visiting or ordering take away during these pressing times

Even though it is trying times we were welcomed warmly and the staff were friendly. We loved all of our dishes and the desserts were wonderful!! My husband said the coffee was great too!

Ambience was ok, but restaurant was almost empty. Waiter was very much "going through the motions", was not service orientated. Ordered 2 fish dishes and had to send 1 back as was under cooked. Dishes are small with very little vegetables. Over priced for what is on offer.

Food was excellent as was the service. The waiter was not that 'warm' but, nonetheless, was extremely efficient and professional. The seafood platter was wonderful. However, it would have been been even better had we been able to enjoy the cold selection first. The problem, as often with seafood platters, was that the cold and hot items were all delivered together. So, the excellent sashimi had to be consumed later to avoid the hot selection cooling too much before enjoying it. The delicate tastes of the sashimi, on the other hand, would have been better consumed prior. Bottom line: a thoroughly enjoyable night out.

We have been to The Herring Room a number of times and it never disappoints. The food is sensational - very fresh and incredibly flavoursome. The staff are efficient and friendly. Can’t recommend this gem enough!

Enjoyed a lovely lunch in a great setting. Service and food was perfect. Couldn't find fault, would highly recommend. Noting this isn't an inexpensive choice. Wasn't busy so hoping there's more trade during other open times as this is a top shelf spot. We were able to chose a table from a mostly empty restaurant; but they don't push us to finish and leave nor did we feel rushed.

Disappointing. Used to be the best restaurant in Manly. Now both food and service are uneven and not worth the money. Some wait staff were personable and highly skilled, others arrogant and lazy. Entrees ranged from great to superb but mains were average (seafood soup had a heavy tomato base, an abundance of over-cooked fish, one prawn and one calamari ring - nothing like it’s subtle and balanced bouillabaisse cousin). Won’t bother again.

We went to The Herring Room for a family birthday dinner and it was fantastic. The staff were friendly and efficient, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was lovely. I can totally recommend this restaurant, we’ll be back.

While no ocean views, it's close enough to the beach to enjoy the clean ocean air. Unique interpretations of some standard seafood dishes, which we loved! For example, the tom kha mussels were absolutely incredible. The wait staff were friendly enough, but for the menu pricing, we were expecting something a little better - but still very good and we'll definitely be back again in the future.

We loved everything about the Herring Room. We were a group of 7 and the evening went so smoothly. Service was impeccable, setting beautiful and the food was delicious. I can’t wait to go back again and try more of the menu!

Professional staff. Verry passionate about their dishes. Verry close to 1hat with delecate, well balanced and well presented seafood dishes. Balmain bugs were like butter and truffle gnoki superb. All excellent flavours with a french bubbly. Best in northern beaches we say.

Sydney's much loved seafood restaurant, is located just off Manly beach in a landmark site that locals have long admired.

The Herring Room is family owned & run by veterans of the industry.

It's set in 1920's inspired space with good old fashioned hospitality. It's bistro styled meals are delivered confidently, inspired by flavours from all around the world.

The Herring Room is the sister restaurant to the recently closed & hugely successful, long running Potts Point restaurant The Sardine Room.

Restaurant Terms and Conditions

We do not offer BYO to groups of 9 guests or more. we are also not available for BYO on NYE, Valentines Day and Melbourne Cup.

Out of respect to our other diners, we require all bookings be seated within 15 minutes of the reservation time, and reserve the right to cancel your reservation if you are more than 15 minutes late.
