9.5/10We loved our afternoon at The Summertown Aristologist, it is truly a little piece of heaven in our very own Adelaide Hills. Love the attention to detail and the local flavours, with everything possible grown in and sourced from the local region. The staff were great and the atmosphere buzzy and engaged. What a delight! We've enjoyed birthday meals here and our interstate visitors have also been impressed.

4.5/10Realise this is contrary to most reviews, & I talk only of our experience, but our table of 4 were all disappointed. Firstly there was strong resistance to our wish, due to dietary & individual preferences, to make conventional individual selections; ie a ‘starter’ followed by something else (the menu lists dishes that way.. so?) It doesn’t say so anywhere, but the chef decides the flow & timing of dishes & we could ONLY proceed with his approval. Secondly, the weekly menu only names some ingredients, I presume to give the kitchen free rein. So for eg, ‘chicken liver | seeds || fig’ could be a terrine or sauteed whole livers or a paté etc. Turned out to be piped parfait with small cubes of semi-dried fig. It was delicious. The best dish any of us had. But the ‘dutch creams | chard || tommy ruff ||| aioli’ (ordered after an earlier phone call recommendation to look at the dish pics online > see what comes up) was a confounding large bowl of weak broth with chunks of undercooked potato, a chard leaf draped over & a dob of aioli on top. No tommy ruff to be seen. Turns out that ingredient comprised the 9 tiny bits of tough-chewy, pickled tommy ruff eventually found submerged. I don’t know if they’d run out & this was cobbled together but it was very, very ordinary. There should also be some indication, or clarification by staff, of what it is. Upon discussion , we were offered to choose again but told that would take at least 20’. With other dishes already half consumed, that wasn’t really an option. We were not offered a dessert as a substitute & were still charged. The other dishes we ordered were tasty enough but belied the ratings of the “excellent” reviews. I get the sort of image & casual hip-ambience they’re going for, I do, & it’s obviously popular with that cohort but I have to wonder has ‘image’ taken precedence over genuine locavore quality. A very recent lunch at the similar ‘mission’ type (ie, locavore/own wine) ???? in McLaren Vale was so,so much better imho.

10/10This Adelaide Hills gem never fails to deliver. We opted for the feed us option, as we always do, and we’re treated to another two hour dining spectacular. Every dish complemented that before it. Local produce, creatively combined into perfectly balanced flavor profiles, and every dining experience is different.

10/10Loved everything about this restaurant. We had the feed me menu option which meant we got to try everything on the menu, so glad we did, everything was delicious and the quality of the ingredients top notch. This would have to be the best meal I have had out in a long time.

9/10Always an interesting meal at the Aristologist. The menu is updated weekly with seasonal food, prepared to highlight the ingredient, and served in a cosy restaurant. A lot of the dishes are cooked with fire or smoke that gives the food a really grounded earthy quality. Love going back just to see what the menu has on it. Never dull.

5/10The space and offering of food was full of potential. Sadly, there was no flow in the service and this made for a very disjointed dining experience. Staff provided lacklustre explanations of each meal. They did not seem understanding with our questions on the wine list either. The list was hard to follow and did not provide simple options. We left full but thirsty.
