Food was great, but service felt rushed. Overheard waitress telling other tables they only had one hour left and 15 mins left. Although they didnt do the same to us, the first few dishes were brought out too fast and no room on the table. Would have been better if we felt like we could enjoy the dinner at our own pace.
Every dish was beautifully presented and flavoursome. Both of us enjoyed all 7 dishes very much. Even a vegetarian dish was outstanding. The fish was one of my favourite. Two desserts too! I will recommend to all my friends.
Very nice food with interesting combinations and well made, if a little spicy. Service was very friendly and the servers suggestions were spot on, however sharing one piece of fish for 6 people was not ideal.
The 7 course set course was good except they replaced the Sydney Rock Oysters with a lentil kofte and the Prawn dish with Sardines. Despite this we saw at least the oysters being served to other tables (probably full paying customers). But the experience was good nevertheless. We didn't fancy desserts (they had 2 as part of the set menu - who has 2 desserts??) but they offered us 2 side dishes as a replacement. We were pretty much full at the end of the meal so it was ok..
The food was spectacular, ingenious in conception and brilliant in execution. Sadly, the service was spectacularly bad, initially inconsiderate and eventually, flat out rude. The maitresse d' seated me briskly at a banquette which proved to have no back support at all. I am an almost 80 year old woman and arrived, alone, walking with difficulty, and with a stick, but no-one came to check on or speak to me throughout the two and half hour meal, although several times I had to stand up to relieve my back pain, and no one even looked at me as I attempted to attract their attention to ask to be moved or the service moved along. The first 3 dishes came immediately, which was a problem as I just had a shoulder replacement and it's still hard to move my hands and arms. The last 4 took almost two hours by which time I was in serious pain. I have travelled the world writing about food, but never been treated like that before. Despite the food, I won't be going back, and I won't be recommending Tulum to others, eithe
Well worth the award of being the best restaurant in Melbourne!
Food is outstanding as always, especially the beef short rib. What makes it even more special is the wonderful, friendly staff - I left my book at the restaurant and was able to go claim it after hours. Thanks so much!
We loved the food, it was really delicious and interesting. However, we did not really enjoy the service. We booked for 50% off a la carte menu, but we were told it was only for set menu on the day. We showed them the booking confirmation which clearly showed that it was for a la carte menu, the management finally accepted it due to the technical issue of their system, but he made us feel we were not welcome as if we have done something wrong. There was not even an apology for the misunderstanding. Also the table sittings are too close and felt a bit compact.
The lamb I was served was 75% fat not meat and the waitress pointed out how good the meat was and I was charged a $2 card fee even though I paid cash , I left a tip but disappointed at a terrible meal
Food was really nice - very modern take on Turkish. Would recommend for a date night or nice occasion (ask for a table towards the back, as the mood was much more romantic there).
Great Turkish fusion food with friendly helpful staff. The flavours of the dishes were exceptional. The owner/chef visited our table which made our experience more personal.
The food was good, but the stand out was the vegetarian main meal which I wish I could remember the name of! I would return for that dish alone. Great wine suggestions from the wait staff.
7 course degustation provides a great overview of the cuisine and are sensational taste bombs. Our meal ended up being 8 courses as they thought we didn’t like our last dessert so they kindly brought out a rice pudding, but in fact we were full to bursting. However, rice pudding is my husband’s all time favourite dessert so he gladly persevered.
Great atmosphere. Dishes were very well executed and obviously well thought through. Some lacked a bit of contrast in terms of texture but all were tasty. The dish of the day for us was the cumin, aubergine and tahini dessert - amazing!
We had read many positive reviews about Tulum and took the opportunity to book while visiting Melbourne. It did not disappoint! Professional, knowledgeable and friendly staff, exciting and varied menu. We tried 5 different starters and 2 mains, a salad and we ordered all the desserts! Everything was amazing. So much detail in presentation, so many different yet complimentary flavours. Can’t wait to go back!
Melbourne has so many dining options and beautiful restaurants. Tulum, however, was by far one of the best dining experiences of the last few years! Such amazing talent! When you try the food you just know that the chef Uysul pours his heart and soul into each and every dish. Thank you so much, for introducing us to the diversity and richness of Turkish cuisine. 217 Carlisle Street., 3183, Balaclava, Australia
Awarded Turkish eatery Tulum Restaurant is one of our hottest picks this September. Famed for its contemporary approach to traditional flavours, the Balaclava venue delivers artfully modern plates without compromising on authentic Anatolian taste. The restaurant this week reintroduces its à la carte menu. It marks the return of favourites including the rebooted cilbir (delicious burnt paprika butter sauce smothering a poached egg, topped with smoked yoghurt and a milk crumble, to be mopped up with soft Turkish bread), and new additions kaburga (short beef ribs cooked overnight, meyhane bulgur, swiss chards, clove roasted cauliflower puree). Diners will still be able to order from Tulum’s Taste of Turkey rotating set menu, which showcases the culinary hotspots of Turkey in 5 – 8 courses with the option of matched wines
