Food is consistently of high quality and very tasty. Service is always efficient and friendly. My wife had the whole fish which on the day was rainbow trout and I had the lamb shank, both of which were excellent. We shared a tiramisu which was a generous serving and up with the best we have experienced over the years. Parking at night is plentiful in the side streets. We highly recommend this eatery.

The food was great and the restaurant had a good buzz about it. The service was ok but at times did go missing. The waiter’s thick Italian accent all seemed a little put on and over the top more so than in a tourist restaurant in Venice. A little more chilled would be great.

This little eatery had been recommended by a friend. When my son asked for Italian food I decided we’d try it. From the phone call and warm welcome then a perfect negroni cocktail, I understood why. Simple bursts and a plate of finelysliced mortadella with a reduced balsamic drizzle & walnuts to whole trout in a delicious tomato, caper & olive sauce, wild boar ragu. THE most delicious crusty bread & olive oil. A perfect mealfrom start to finish. Next time we may save room for dessert ????

Great tasting food and warm friendly service. Definitely pasta and fish dishes are the best options - all really tasty. The steak is underwhelming. Desserts stunning. BYO

We love this little restaurant, always welcoming and attentive staff. Delicious and super fresh food. We shared arancini and spicy calamari, so so fresh! My barramundi with tomato based sauce and olives was amazing. The lamb shank so tender and delicious.

We have been to Via Alta a number of times and usually very impressed. This time however we had the tasting menu. Very badly balanced. Beautiful bread, calamari and tiramisu, and sadly the the gnocchi, steak, fish, and potatoes not up to the standard we enjoyed in the past. Hope that night was just a one off.

A very handy and nice location for local dining. Front of staff was polite, ambience was good. Food was good though a bit pricey so it will stop me dining there too frequently as my local gem. For entree, I had the Burrata which costs $20, a little steep for a none too fancy entree and my main was a lamb ragu pasta special of the day at $33 which came in a small portion (granted it was rich and enough for me - but portion size was small, can't share). If not for the 50% off deal, the prices were comparable to an almost fine dining venue.

This restaurant offers a point of difference in that despite being Italian, the food is not your typical Italian mainstream choices, and is a bit more innovative in terms of the menu on offer.

Great food. Decent portions. First time participating in the Fork Festival deal and it was well worth it. The barramundi was outstanding. Highly recommended!

About the restaurant

Bellissimo Italian amongst the north shore burbs

Via Alta. It’s the kind of restaurant that you will kill to have in your local burb. A friendly, welcoming spot that’s open lunch and dinner, and absolutely nails boisterous memorable Italian cuisine. Yep, you definitely want this trattoria in your hood. Scan the big blackboard menu and begin the difficult task of choosing (good luck!): fritto misto of prawns and calamari, veal ossobucco with saffron and gremolata, baked baccala pie and crumbed and fried Milanese meatballs... the list goes on and on. In our opinion you shouldn't miss out on the meatballs, these bad boys are insanely irresistible and gobsmackingly good. Via Alta is the first bambino of Alessandro Pavoni (of the two hatted Ormeggio at the Spit) and Bill Drakopoulous (of Sydney’s Restaurant Group and Aqua Restaurant Group) who joined forces to bring much needed Italiano life to the north shore dining scene….Bellissimo!

Best dish: mondeghini - crumbed and fried Milanese meatballs made with scotch fillet, mortadella and Italian pork sausage, piled into a tall metal cone lined with brown paper.
