Located just three kilometres from the city centre South Melbourne is situated between the south bank of the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay. As an inner suburb, its history is linked with the fortunes, growth and expansion of Melbourne itself, reflected in its magnificent and ornate civic buildings including the much-loved South Melbourne Town Hall. Originally known as Emerald Hill it became its own city and was renamed South Melbourne in 1883.
One of the highlights of the suburb and the heart of the community is the South Melbourne Market, which not only sells fresh produce but also runs a program of events including regular Night Markets. Clarendon Street runs through the centre of the suburb and lined with restaurants, cafes and shops.
