Located 8 km north west of Melbourne’s CBD, Essendon is sometimes called “the Toorak of the North”. A family-oriented suburb, this neighbourhood is full of big houses and big cars set among established leafy streets. There are Art Deco homes to be found, as well as old Edwardian styles.
Situated close to Melbourne Airport, the café culture is strong here. Locals are fond of great coffee, long brunches and the occasional boozy lunch at one of the many pubs in the area. The picturesque Maribyrnong River Loop Walk begins in Essendon and winds its way for 4km; it’s the perfect Sunday morning walk before meeting friends for breakfast. There is good strip shopping on Mt Alexander Road and Napier Street full of cafes, bakeries and assorted eateries. Turkish restaurant Istanbul Café Grill Bar, situated in the heart of Essendon, is a standout for delicious fresh food. Essendon residents have a great appetite for sport, especially football and the Essendon AFL Football Club.
