The South Wharf area of Melbourne is just a short walk across the bridge to Flinders Street Station and Federation Square. The whole strip is lined with restaurants that cater to tourists and Melbournians alike. Weekend drinks and long lunches along the river are popular, especially at waterfront restaurant bar The Arbory and its sister summertime bar, Arbory Afloat, which pops up on the water itself. To cater for the full spectrum of international clientele, you can get your hands on any cuisine you fancy.
The Arts Centre and National Gallery of Victoria are up one end of the strip, while Crown Casino and high-end shopping can be found at the other. The area is full of hotels, with new options popping up all the time (think Ink for young hipsters or Shadowplay at Peppers). Enjoy strolls along the river and city views to a backdrop of street performers and the renowned flame display outside Crown. For a bit of fun, try Ponyfish Bar, smack bang in the middle of the river.
