Bankstown
The suburb of Bankstown is 16 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s CBD. Former Prime Minister Paul Keating grew up in this suburb which was, and still is, a working-class Western Sydney suburb. Bankstown is one of the most multicultural and ethnically diverse areas in the country with over 60 different languages spoken.
This cultural diversity extends to the wide variety of food options and cuisines on offer. Residents and visitors can choose from Thai, Lebanese, Lithuanian, Filipino and Australian fare. There is a hub of restaurants, cafes and shops around the train station, while Saigon Place (also called Bankstown City Plaza) has lots of Vietnamese restaurants and vendors. The Bankstown markets are held on Sundays. Chat to vendors and browse to your heart’s content for arts & crafts, farmers market produce and secondhand goods.
